3. What Is Perioperative?
Perioperative : is the care provided for the patient before , during ,
after the surgery .
Phases of Perioperative period :
1.Pre Operative

PHASE??
1.Baseline vital signs.
2.Check the surgical consent form and others for completeness.
3.Document allergies.
4.Document height and weight.
5.History and Physical.
6.Ensure all documentation, preoperative procedures, and orders are
complete..
6. PREOPERATIVE PATIENT
PREPARATION
1.Patient should remove most clothing and wear a hospital gown.
2.Valuables should remain with family member or be locked up.
3.Tape rings in place if they cannot be removed.
4.Remove all pierced jewelry.
5.Patient wears an identification band.
6.Dentures, prosthetic devices, hearing aids, contact lenses, fingernail
polish, and artificial nails must be removed.
7. THE GOALS OF PRE-OP
1.Be free from injury.
2.Be free from infection.
3.Maintain fluid , acid base and electrolyte balance and skin integrity
4.demonstrate and understanding pf physiology and psychological
response to the planned surgery.
5.Participate in rehabilitation process following surgery.
9. INTRAOPERATIVE PHASE
Is the beginning when the pt is transferred to the operating room
also called table until transfer to the post operative recovery area
10. WHAT THINGS THAT ARE
RESPONSIBLE NURSE IN THE
OPERATING ROOM??
1.Positioning : ensure safety , comfort , good body positioning to
prevent alteration in skin
2.Drabbing : to create a sterile field around the operative site and
prevent spread of microorganism.
3.Documentation : throughout the surgery nurse document on going
assessment , monitoring V/S , urine output , dressing , drains ,
specimens
11. POSTOPERATIVE PHASE
Is the lasting from admission to the recovery area to complete
recovery from surgery.
Post-op phase can break down into:
Phase 1 : which providing patient care from totally anesthetized state
to one requiring less acute nursing intervention.
Phase 2 :prepare the patient for self family care.
Phase 3 : extended care environment ongoing care.
12. POSTOPERATIVE ORDER
A) Monitoring:
1.Vital sign (pulse, BP, R.R, Temp) every 15-30 min.
2.ECG.
3.Fluid balance ( intake and output(.
B) Respiratory Care:
1.O2 mask.
2.Tracheal suction.
3.Chest physiotherapy.

C) Position in bed and mobilization:
1.Turning in bed usually every 30 min. until full mobilization.
2.Special position required sometimes.
D) DIAT:
1.NPO
2.Liquids.
3.Soft diet.

14. POSTOP COMPLICATION
1.Cardiovascular complication includes hemorrhage , shock ,
thrombophlebitis , pulmonary embolism.
2.preventing respiratory complication includes pneumonia ,
atelectasis.
3.Preventing surgical complication : goal is to promote healing
process and prevent complication.
4.Promoting postop rest , comfort , good bowel and urine
elimination.
