2. THE SUBSTANCE OF SANCTIFICATION
• Sanctification=means a setting apart from that
which is common and unclean. The Old
Testament uses the word to describe things. The
New Testament uses the word to describe
people.
• Sanctify is one of the words related to
consecrate, and suggest not only a separation
from but unto. From sin unto salvation, from
works to grace, from hell to heaven. 1Corinthians
5:7, Romans 12:2
2
3. HOW IT WORKS
• Sanctification is the act of The Holy Spirit in
sanctifying or making holy the believer, by
implanting within them the Christian graces,
and the destruction of the sinful affections.
• Sanctification as the work of free grace
whereby we are renewed in the whole man
after the image of God. We are separated
from the reign of sin unto God for His service.

4. SANCTIFICATION IS NOT
• Sanctification is not moral virtue. One cannot be
sanctified without exhibiting the highest virtues.
A moral person may hate sin, and also could hate
grace just as much. Acts 17:18
• It is not a mere religious practice. It is not
holiness in pretense. A pretend sanctification is a
statue without life. 2Timothy 3:5, Jude 12
• It is not eradication. Is does not destroy the sinful
nature within us. It is not sinlessness. Sin does
not die in the believer, he dies to sin. Romans
6:12
4
5. WHAT IS IT?
• It is a supernatural work. We are by nature
inherently sinful, thus it is God’s prerogative to
cleanse. 1Peter 1:2, Leviticus 21:8.
• Holiness is divinely infused. It is God’s perfect
work whereby He sets believers aside
perfectly and forever for Himself.
• Systematic theology teaches that justification
precedes sanctification, but scripture teaches
the exact opposite. 2Corithians 1:2; 6:11
5
6. WHAT IS IT CONT.
• It is an intrinsic work. It is not an external
covering, it is sap in the root. 1Peter 3:4
• It is a extensive work. A divinely provided
sanctification covers all our depraved being,
spirit, soul, and body. 1Thessalonian 5:23
• It is a beautiful work. Sanctification is glory in the
seed, and glory is sanctification in the flower.
Exodus 15:11
• It is a abiding work. Our practical sanctification
may be eclipsed. But our positional sanctification
never vary. 1John 2:27; 3:9
• It is a progressive work. Sanctification is what
Christ is doing in us. John 17:17
6
7. THE SECRET OF SANCTIFICATION
• Christ was separated from the world for our
sakes. So our daily sanctification should be for
His sake. John 17:19, Hebrews 2:11
• We are sanctified by God, He is the source of
all spiritual blessings. Hebrews 10:11, Jude 1
• We are sanctified by Christ. Christ is the
medium of our sanctification. He died to save
us from the government of sin, as well as from
its guilt. Titus 2:14
7

agent in our holiness. Romans 15:16

functions as a mirror, and a place to wash.

putting off the old man. The positive side putting
on the new. Colossians 3:12-17
• We are sanctified by prayer. It is the answer to
prayer. Job 14:4
• We are sanctified by Godly fellowship.
• We are sanctified by chastisement.
8
9. HOW IT WORKS CONT.
• We are sanctified by Godly fellowship.
Association results in assimilation. Proverbs 13:20
• We are sanctified by our own wills. God never
saves or sanctifies against the human will.
1Thessalonians 4:3, 1Corinthians 6:17
• We are sanctified by chastisement. The
chastisement of life fashion us into His image.
Hebrews 12:6-11
• We are sanctified by the blessed hope. We
cannot live a sinful evil life if we believe Jesus is
coming again. 1John 3:3, Ephesians 5:27
9
