- 24. Voyages from the Middle-east to China had long begun predating the
period of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. , even chronicled by the Arab and
Persian travellers who were already familiar with the route to China.
Apart from the overland SILK ROAD, the sea voyage between Arabia-
Persia to China had begun since the Phoenicians period.
According to Chiu T’ang Shu (record) Islam’s contact with China started
as early as 31H / 651CE when an emissary from Ta Shih (Arabia) visited
the T’ang Emperor.
Since the time of Caliph ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan r.a, many more emmisaries
were sent and many Muslims settlers were accepted into China.

- 25. Muslim communities began to be established especially in the coastal
region of China, as well as along the trade route – in the NUSANTARA.
NUSANTARA being a stop over on the sea-route to China, one of the
earliest Arab Muslim settlement known was at BARUS on northern tip
of SAMUDRA (on Sumatra). Evidence indicated that Muslims were
already present there; 34 years after the Hijrah of the Prophet s.a.w.
Later with the fall of Baghdad to the Mongols, Muslim influx (diaspora)
to this region was greatly enhanced. And conversion and intermarriages
with the indigenous occured, and with Islam as catalyst to assimilate all
into a larger community as Muslims, a new hegemony was forged.

- 26. The approach of DA’WAH was of two-pronged : towards the influential
class (AL-MALA-A); and to the masses (AL-JUMHUR).
These Muslims’ embodiment of wisdom; tolerance and patience;
exuding examplary way of life and nobility of their character;
spreading knowledge, Justice and Compassion; projecting the message
of Mercy for all the world; improving lives of people ; binding people
into a genuine brotherhood upon a common faith; forging a community
through what I termed “civilizational osmosis”, etc. that was how the
spread of Islam was done. Much could still be learnt by the present
Muslims from their history and their approach.

- 43. Although MAULANA MALIK IBRAHIM (Sunan Gerisik) began his mission in
Java during the Majapahit period, this was restricted to the coast at
GERISEK . It was after RADEN RAHMAT (his cousin) came later on from
CHAMPA that heightened the spread of Islam there.
RADEN RAHMAT or AHMAD RAHMATULLAH (Sunan Ampel), father was SAYYID
IBRAHIM ZEIN AL-AKBAR BIN JAMALUDDIN HUSSEIN . And his mother, and the
queen (wife) of the Majapahit king, were both sisters-princess from CHAMPA.
This guaranteed for him, royal patronage. It was then that a kind of council of
‘ULAMA – a shura of Islamic scholars was forged – geared towards DA’WAH and
Islamic education, from which their prominent leaders became well-known as the
WALI SONGO (“The nine saints”).

MAJLIS WALI (where consensus were obtained from the elders amongst
the Scholars at Ampel) the authority to nominate the succession and
end the strive in the land.
They chose RADEN FATAH (the son of the Majapahit king) and a student
of Sunan Ampel, thus establishing the first Islamic Sultanate at DEMAK,
also as a continuation to the Majapahit kingdom.
It was from this period on, that Islam continued to be entrenched even
to the outlying regions, with proliferation of Da’wah and the setting up
of schools (pesantren), settlements, mosques, etc.

[4] Sultanate of CIREBON (BANTEN)
The Muslims then had to face challenges from the Portugese, then
Dutch colonialist, who came also to evangelise Indonesia. The phase of
peaceful DA’WAH was intermittently interrupted with JIHAD to gain
freedom from the Dutch. Many Islamic scholars were martyred or
exiled, yet even in their land of exile they continued to spread ISLAM.

- 65. Notwithstanding, there were also other MUBALLIGH (preachers) who
helped in the spread of Islam, whether from Arabia, Central Asia, India,
China, the peninsula and other islands etc. Yet there was already a kind
of ‘networking’ amongst all these DU’AT and ‘ULAMA (Islamic
propagators and scholars), binding them towards a common cause and
aspiration of establishing Allah’s words as the highest ( LA-’ALLA
-KALIMATULLAAHI -HIYA- ‘UL-YA) in the whole region.
Another important factor to note is, the role of the scholars ( ‘ULAMA)
and supporters (MUHIBBEEN) of the descendants of the Prophet’s
Household (Ahul-bayt) in continuously spreading Islam in the region.

- 99. Another important contributing factor, which impacted greatly the
spread of Islam and its teachings, was the phenomena of the
Pilgrimage and travellings of our scholars (“HAJJ-WA-SIYAR” ).
Many who made pilgrimage for the Hajj would undertake a journey
of continously seeking knowledge – stopping over at well-
established centres of Islamic learning (some dubbed as the
verandah of Makkah –SERAMBI MAKKAH) - meeting, learning and
strengthening the network for DA’WAH.

honoured of you in the sight of Allah is (he who is) the most righteous
of you. And Allah has full knowledge and is well acquainted (with all
