"Called to Be Witnesses”
Acts 1:1-8
Acts 1:1-8
1
Theophilus, the first scroll I wrote concerned everything Jesus did
and taught from the beginning, 2
right up to the day when he was
taken up into heaven. Before he was taken up, working in the power
of the Holy Spirit, Jesus instructed the apostles he had chosen.
3
After his suffering, he showed them that he was alive with many
convincing proofs. He appeared to them over a period of forty days,
speaking to them about God’s kingdom. 4
While they were eating
together, he ordered them not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for
what the Father had promised. He said, “This is what you heard from
me: 5
John baptized with water, but in only a few days you will be
baptized with the Holy Spirit.”
6
As a result, those who had gathered together asked Jesus, “Lord,
are you going to restore the kingdom to Israel now?” 7
Jesus replied,
“It isn’t for you to know the times or seasons that the Father has set
by his own authority. 8
Rather, you will receive power when the Holy
Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
2. in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
God promises that the power of the Holy Spirit will enable us to be
the witnesses He has called us to be. It’s not by our power, but by
HIS power.
Our task is to make ourselves available to be used by Him.
God is calling us to be “Senders”, “Goers”, or BOTH!
“Senders” GIVE because they love God and are faithful with God’s
resources.
Matthew 6:21
21
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2 Corinthians 8:1-6
1
Brothers and sisters, we want to let you know about the grace of
God that was given to the churches of Macedonia. 2
While they were
being tested by many problems, their extra amount of happiness and
their extreme poverty resulted in a surplus of rich generosity. 3
I
assure you that they gave what they could afford and even more
than they could afford, and they did it voluntarily. 4
They urgently
begged us for the privilege of sharing in this service for the saints. 5
They even exceeded our expectations, because they gave
themselves to the Lord first and to us, consistent with God’s will. 6
As a result, we challenged Titus to finish this work of grace with you
the way he had started it.
OUR FAITH PROMISE COMMITMENT
“A commitment to the Missions’ Budget for the support of our
missionaries and mission projects that is over and above the tithes
and offerings given to the general operating budget of the church”
Goers “GO” because they love God and share His passion for the lost.
Luke 15:6, 10, 24
6
... ‘Celebrate with me because I’ve found my lost sheep.’
10
... I tell you, joy breaks out in the presence of God’s angels
over one sinner who changes both heart and life.”
24 ...this son of mine was dead and has come back to life! He was
lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate.
For Personal and Group Reflection
1. In the Acts 1:1-8 passage, what do the disciples think will happen
when they receive the Holy Spirit?
2. What are some ways their idea of the kingdom differs from
Jesus?
3. What is the importance of “waiting” in verse 4? How does that
apply to your life?
4. As a follower of Christ, what is the impact on you of the words
in Acts 1:8? What is your Jerusalem... Judea... Samaria?
