2. Objective
Patrons – Globalization – To provide
access to library content throughout
worldwide.
Internal Operations – To create an
automated digital pipeline from
digitizing content to patron consumption.
Extending to crowdsourcing in future.

15. EAD Tool
(Encoded Archival Description)
A finding aid that adds a viewable structure to a collection.
- Many large, complex collections
- Aleph stores only the collection level descriptive metadata
- Add / edit / delete component level details
- Rosetta 3.0 doesn’t have enough functionality for our
collections.
25. Rosetta Dual Role
Two instances of Rosetta
1. DRPS – Digital Records Preservation
System (dark archive)
2. DCMS – Digital Content Management
System (public use)
26. Why separate instances?
-Security / Access
-Redundancy
-Performance vs. Preservation
- Fixity – don’t require for DCMS
- Asset Lifecycle – frequent updates
- Rendition – Web
optimized, compression, integration
- Storage layer – tape vs. spinning
27. Challenges
• Configuration is fairly complex within and between systems
• Large Batch Ingest has been difficult
• Metadata enhancement and updating not easy
• Re-ingesting content into Rosetta problematic
• Collections Management
– Built EAD tool to manage collections
– Rosetta 3.x?
– Periodicals?
• PDF Content
– Progressive PDF download in Adobe Reader X is not fully supported
– 2 searches to see results of a PDF Full text search.
28. Successes
– Ingested over 57,000 Family books ranging from 1
MB to 800 MB for Family History department.
– Ingested 700,000 files. Most are linked to EADs for
Church History.
– Consistent User experiences even with large files
– Good response times
• 100,000 views / Month
• Once the pipelines are established, they work well.
– Able to create customizable solutions for multiple
institutions.
29. Under Development
– Restricted content
– Mobile capable solutions (Responsive
Design)
– Reporting capabilities
– Monitor usage

Go to the EAD Viewer which provides structure for collections.
You can see different levels of the structure map. 3 leves are visible. There can be more. The levels will scroll to the left. A thumbnail from Rosetta will show on the right.Clicking on the thumbnail will show the content of that folder.
This is Sitting Bull, who was a famous Indian chief in the 1800’s. You can click on a description on the left and change the photos.
Clicking the INFO tab on the upper right will slide into view the existing metadata.
Next,Aleph and Rosetta currently does not handle Collections very well. In the coming releases of Rosetta there are some Collection level capabilities but we had very large, complex collections. We built our own tool, the EAD ToolLet me show you an example
