What is New
Media?
From Wikipedia:
New media is a broad term to encompass the
amalgamation of traditional media such as film, images,
music, spoken and written word, with the interactive
power of computer and communications technology,
computer-enabled consumer devices and most
importantly the Internet.

• as interactive user
• feedback, creative participation and community
formation around the media content.
This dynamic life, moves, breathes and flows with pulsing
excitement in real time. Another important promise of new
media is the "democratization" of the creation, publishing,
distribution and consumption of media content.

Comics or Animated Cartoons
1. Have students create or “recreate” scenes from
Malcolm X by using an comic strip application like Pixton
Video
1. Have students create their own videos about the text
using their cell phones, web cams or inexpensive video
cameras. Student videos can be uploaded to Facebook or
Twitter.
Geo-tagging and Geo-experiences
1. Using Google Earth (googleearth.com), take students
on a tour of the many places where Malcolm X lived. You
can also explore those locales during the times when he
lived there.
2. Physically visit places where Malcolm X spent time,
such as various locales in Harlem. Using Foursquare
(www.foursquare.com), “check in” to these places and
chart a story based on the check-ins.

1. Have students develop a Facebook page for The
Autobiography of Malcolm X where they act as the “teachers.”
Providing information, quotes, “did you knows”, video links,
article links for page visitors.
2. Create a twitter (www.twitter.com) handle such as
@malcolmxquotes to create a storyline from quotes found in
the text. As a class, select and post quotes.
3. Create a Tumblr (www.tumblr.com) account to reimagine the
text through text, video, and images.
4. Use a closed or private network (for example, through
www.ning.com) to develop an online community for your class
or group to discuss the book. Here’s a link of social

5. Link with another educator and have a literary chat via
Skype (www.skype.com) between your two classrooms.
6. Locate an elder, professor, literary critic who you can
connect via Skype and have him or her provide a talk about
the text or time periods when the book was written.

unfolding of the story.
