2. Covenant Defined "A covenant is a sovereign pronouncement of God by which He establishes a relationship of responsibility between: Himself and an individual Himself and mankind in general Himself and a nation Himself and a specific human family

3. Covenant defined (Cont’d) A covenant in one category may overlap others. The covenants are normally unconditional in the sense that God obligates Himself in grace, by the unrestricted declaration, 'I will' to accomplish certain announced purposes, despite any failure on the part of the person or people with whom He covenants. The human response to the divinely announced purpose is always important, leading as it does to blessing for obedience and discipline for disobedience. But human failure is never permitted to abrogate the covenant or block its ultimate fulfillment." (C.I. Scofield)

6. MAIN COVENANTS (CONT’D) Universal and General Covenants-meaning that the whole race of people is represented as present as Adam in his failure. Edenic Adamic Noahic All the other covenants are made with Israel or Israelites and apply primarily to them, although with ultimate blessing to the whole world. The Mosaic Covenant is the only “conditional” covenant. The fulfillment of the promise was made conditional upon Israel obedience to the law.

8. Solaric(Gen 1:14-18; 8:22; Ps 89:34-37; Jer31:35-7; 33:19-26) This covenant was made between God and man. It promised eternal seasons of fruitfulness and that man would continue forever – as long as the solar system endures.

9. Edenic (Gen 1:26-3:24) This was made with Adam and Eve before the fall and was conditional upon obedience (Gen 2:17). Ten articles of the Covenant Be fruitful, not sterile ( Gen 1:28) Multiply, increase human kind (Gen 1:28) Replenish the earth with man as before, when Lucifer ruled (Gen 1:28) Rule all God’s work (Gen 1:28; Ps 8) Subdue the earth (Gen 1:28) Till the ground and be a partaker of the garden (Gen 2:15) Protect dominion from enemies (Gen 2:15) Freely eat of all things except the tree of knowledge (Gen 1:29-30) Refrain from eating of the tree of knowledge (Gen 2:16-17) Fear the penalty for sin (Gen 2:17)

10. Adamic (Gen 3:14-19) This agreement was made with Adam and Eve after the fall and before the expulsion from the garden. It ushered in the Dispensation of Conscience. The covenant consisted of two parts: The five-fold curse on The serpent (Gen 3:14-15; Isa 65:25) Satan (Gen 3:15; John 12:31; Col 2:14-17; Heb 2:14-18) The woman (Gen 3:16; I Cor 11:3; 14:34; I Tim3:11-15) The man (Gen 3: 17-19; Ps. 90:9-10;Rom 5:12-21) The ground ( Gen 3:17-19; Rom 8:18-23 The promise (Gen 3:15) – This included redemption and the removal of the curse ( Rom. 8:18-23; Rev 22:3)

11. Cainic(Gen 4:11-15) This was a pledge to Cain of vengeance on anyone who found him and killed him.

12. Noahic ( Gen 8:20 – 9:29) This agreement was made with Noah and the beasts of the field after the flood and ushered in the Dispensation of Human Government. The terms of the covenant were: That God would not curse the ground or living creatures anymore “while the earth remaineth”. (Gen 8:22; 9:12,16) That man should replenish the earth forever (Gen 9:1, 12, 16) That man should rule the earth (Gen 9:2,3) That animals should be eaten but not the blood (Gen 9:3, 4) That there should be capital punishment for murderers (Gen 9:5, 6; Num 35) That the rainbow should be a sign of the covenant (Gen 9:12-17) The covenant would be eternal (Gen 9:12, 16)

13. Abrahamic ( Gen 12: 1-3) This agreement was made with Abraham after the confusion of tongues when God saw that it was impossible to deal with the race as a whole. It ushered in the Dispensation of Promise. This covenant consisted of two parts: The seven-fold promise I will make thee a great nation (Gen 12) Make thy name great(Gen 12) Thou shall be a blessing (Gen 12) I will bless them that bless thee (Gen 12) I will bless thee( Gen 12 & 13) I will curse them that curse thee (Gen 12) In thee shall all nations of the world be blessed (Gen 12) The sign of this covenant : circumcision (Gen 17:1-21; Isa 24:5)

14. Hagaric (Gen 16: 7-14) This was a covenant made with Hagar concerning her seed through Ishmael, Abraham’s son. It concerned many generations and was in three parts: Commands Return, submit to Sarah (Gen 16,9)) Call her son Ishmael, meaning God shall hear(Gen 16:11)) Promises: Seed to be multiplied beyond number (Gen 16:10; 17:20-22) Ishmael to be blessed and become a great nation (Gen 17:20: 21:17-18) Ishmael to beget twelve princes ( Gen 17:20; 25:12-18) Prophetical revelation: A. Ishmael to be a wild man (Gen 16:12 B. His hand to be against every man (Gen 16:12) C. Every man’s hand to be against him (Gen 16:12) D. Ishmael to dwell in the presence of his brethren (Gen 16:12)

15. Sarahic(Gen 17:15-19; 18:9-15) This covenant made with Sarah promised certain blessings to her and her offspring, Isaac, for many generations. It was in two parts: Commands Change her name from Sarai to Sarah, meaning princess (Gen 17:15) Call her son Isaac (Gen 17:19) Promises To be blessed with a son (Gen 17:16-19: 18:10-15) To be made a mother of nations (Gen 17:16) To become a mother of many Kings (Gen 17:16) Abrahamic covenant to be continue with Isaac (Gen 17:19) Abrahamic covenant to be continue with Isaac’s seed forever (Gen 17:19)

16. Healing (Ex 15:26; 23:25) This covenant was made a part of the new covenant for Christ “took our infirmities and bare our sickness”(Isa 53; Mt 8:17; 1 Peter 2:24) This covenant as made with Israel and all who desired or chose to come under the covenant of God given to Moses. It was in two parts: Commands Diligently hearken to God’s voice (Ex 15:26; Lev 26:14-15) Do that which is right in His sight (Ex 15:26) Give ear to his commandments (Ex 15:26) Keep all his statutes ( Ex 15:26; Lev 26:3, 14-15) Serve the Lord (Ex 23:25) Promises “I will put none of these diseases upon thee”(Ex 15:26) “I am the Lord that healeth thee” (Ex 15:26) “I will take away sickness from the midst of thee”(Ex 23:25)

17. Mosaic (Ex 20:1-24;8; 2 Cor 3:6-18) A conditional covenant connected with the giving of the Ten Commandments and the Levitical priesthood. Commands Obey My voice (Ex 19:3-6) Keep My covenant (Ex 19:3-6) Promises Shall be God’s chosen people (Ex 19:3-6) Shall be a kingdom of priest (Ex 19:3-6) Shall be a holy nation(Ex 19:3-6)

18. Mosaic (ConT’D) The Mosaic Covenant was given to Israel in three divisions, each essential to the others and together forming the Mosaic Covenant, that is , the commandments, expressing the righteous will of God (Ex 20:1-26); the judgments, governing the social life of Israel (Ex 21:1-24:11); and the ordinances, governing the religious life of Israel (Ex 24:12-31:18). These three elements form “the law,” as that expression is generally used in the N.T. (Mt 5:17,17).

19. Levitic (Num 25:10-14) This covenant was given through Moses to Phinehas, the son of Levi, who was zealous for the Lord and executed judgment upon rebels (Num25:1-9). It consisted of two great promises: Peace and blessings to Levi’s house ( Num 25:12) An everlasting priesthood (Num 25:13)

20. Palestinian(Lev 26; Dt 11:8-32; 27:1-30;20) This covenant was made with Israel through Moses and was conditional upon the obedience of the nation. There were seven parts: Dispersion for disobedience (Dt 28:63-68; 30:1) Repentance while in dispersion (Dt 30:2; Zech 12:10-14) The return of the Lord (Dt 30:3; Zech 14; Acts 15:14-17) Restoration in the land (Dt 30:5; Isa 11:1-12; Ez 37; Mt 24:31) National conversion (Dt 30:6; Isa 66; Zech 12:10-13; Rom 11:26) Judgment of Israel’s oppressors ( Dt 30:7; Zech 14; Mt 25:31-46) National prosperity (Dt 30:9-10; Rom 11)

21. Salt(Lev 2:13; Num18:19) This was covenant made with Israel concerning the sacrifices they were to offer forever. In Palestine and surrounding countries salt was used in making covenants; and if persons dinned together on food with salt in it they became friends, though they may have been enemies before. Covenants were generally confirmed at sacrificial meals and salt was always present. The covenant of salt pictured the everlasting friendship between God and His people (Num 18;19).

22. Davidic(2 Sam 7:1-17) This agreement was made with David and his house through Nathan the prophet, and was conditioned upon obedience as all other covenants. It was to be an everlasting covenant containing seven blessings: A Davidic house forever (2 Sam 7:13-16; Ps 89:20-37; Lk 1:32-35) A Davidic throne forever (2 Sam 7:13-16; Isa 9:6,7; Lk 1:32-35) A Davidic kingdom forever (2 Sam 7:13-16; Isa 9:6,7; Lk 1:32-35) A sure land for Israel forever ( Gen 17:2; 2 Sam 7:10) No more afflictions from the nations forever (Dt 28:1-30:10; 2 Sam 7:10) The Fatherly care of God forever (2 Sam 7:14; 2 Cor 6:15-18) An eternal covenant (2 Sam 7:10-16; Isa 9:6,7; Lk 1:32,33)

23. New covenant(Jer 31:33-40; Heb 8:6-13; 9) This covenant was made by Christ (Heb 8:6). It is still in force and includes all the terms, conditions, commands, promises and benefits revealed in the new testament. The features of the New Covenant includes: Secures the personal revelation of the Lord to every believer (Heb 8:11) It assures the complete oblivion of sins ( Heb 8:12) It rest upon an accomplished redemption (Heb 9:114-12, 18-23) It secures the perpetuity, future conversion, and blessing of a repentant Israel, with whom the New Covenant will yet be ratified.
