The significance of incorporating a 3D point source in the ISS internal multiple attenuator for a 1D subsurface - Xinglu Lin* and Arthur Weglein

A new and general wave theoretical wavelet estimation method is derived. Knowing the seismic wavelet is important both for processing seismic data and for modeling the seismic response. To obtain the wavelet, both statistical (e.g., Wiener-Levinson) and deterministic (matching surface seismic to well-log data) methods are generally used. In the marine case, a far-field signature is often obtained with a deep-towed hydrophone. The statistical methods do not allow obtaining the phase of the wavelet, whereas the deterministic method obviously requires data from a well. The deep-towed hydrophone requires that the water be deep enough for the hydrophone to be in the far field and in addition that the reflections from the water bottom and structure do not corrupt the measured wavelet. None of the methods address the source array pattern, which is important for amplitude-versus- offset (AVO) studies.

The inverse scattering series for tasks associated with primaries: direct non-linear inversion of 1D elastic media. In this paper, research on direct inversion for two pa- rameter acoustic media (Zhang and Weglein, 2005) is extended to the three parameter elastic case. We present the first set of direct non-linear inversion equations for 1D elastic media (i.e., depth varying P-velocity, shear velocity and density). The terms for moving mislocated reflectors are shown to be separable from amplitude correction terms. Although in principle this direct inversion approach requires all four components of elastic data, synthetic tests indicate that consistent value-added results may be achieved given only ˆDPP measurements. We can reasonably infer that further value would derive from actually measuring ˆDPP , ˆD PS, ˆDSP and ˆDSS as the method requires. The method is direct with neither a model matching nor cost function minimization.

Internal multiple attenuation using inverse scattering: Results from prestack 1 & 2D acoustic and elastic synthetics R. T. Coates*, Schlumberger Cambridge Research, A. B. Weglein, Arco Exploration and Production Technology Summary The attenuation of internal multiples in a multidimensional earth is an important and longstanding problem in exploration seismics. In this paper we report the results of applying an attenuation algorithm based on the inverse scattering series to synthetic prestack data sets generated in on and two dimensional earth models. The attenuation algorithm requires no information about the subsurface structure or the velocity field. However, detailed information about the source wavelet is a prerequisite. An attractive feature of: the attenuation algorithm is the preservation of the amplitude (and phase) of primary events in the data; thus allowing for subsequent AVO and other true amplitude processing.

The Inverse Scattering Series (ISS) is a direct inversion method for a multidimensional acoustic, elastic and anelastic earth. It communicates that all inversion processing goals are able to be achieved directly and without any subsurface information. This task is reached through a task-specific subseries of the ISS. Using primaries in the data as subevents of the first-order internal multiples, the leading-order attenuator can predict the time of all the first-order internal multiples and is able to attenuate them. However, the ISS internal multiple attenuation algorithm can be a computationally demanding method specially in a complex earth. By using an approach that is based on two angular quantities and that was proposed in Terenghi et al. (2012), the cost of the algorithm can be controlled. The idea is to use the two angles as key-control parameters, by limiting their variation, to disregard some calculated contributions of the algorithm that are negligible. Moreover, the range of integration can be chosen as a compromise of the required degree of accuracy and the computational time saving. This time-saving approach is presented

A multiple attenuation method derived from an inverse scattering series is described. The inversion series approach allows a separation of multiple attenuation subseries from the full series. The surface multiple attenuation subseries was described and illustrated in Carvalho et al. (1991, 1992). The internal multiple attenuation method consists of selecting the parts of the odd terms that are associated with removing only multiply reflected energy. The method, for both types of multiples, is multidimensional and does not rely on periodicity or differential moveout, nor does it require a model of the reflectors generating the multiples. An example with internal and surface multiples will be presented.

Summary Methods for removal of free-surface and internal multiples have been developed from bath a feedback model approach and inverse scatterin g theory. White these two formulations derive from different mathematica) viewpoints, the resulting algorithm s for free-surface multiple are very similar. By contrast , the feedback and inverse scattering method for internal multiple are totally different and have different requirements for sub surface information or interpretive intervention . The former removes all multiple related to a certain boundary with the a of a surface integral along this boundary ; the alter wilt predict and attenuate a ll internal multiple a t the same time . In this paper, we continue our comparison study of these internal multiple attenuation method ; specifically , we examine two different realizations of the feedback method and the inverse scattering technique .

Context. WASP-76 b has been a recurrent subject of study since the detection of a signature in high-resolution transit spectroscopy data indicating an asymmetry between the two limbs of the planet. The existence of this asymmetric signature has been confirmed by multiple studies, but its physical origin is still under debate. In addition, it contrasts with the absence of asymmetry reported in the infrared (IR) phase curve. Aims. We provide a more comprehensive dataset of WASP-76 b with the goal of drawing a complete view of the physical processes at work in this atmosphere. In particular, we attempt to reconcile visible high-resolution transit spectroscopy data and IR broadband phase curves. Methods. We gathered 3 phase curves, 20 occultations, and 6 transits for WASP-76 b in the visible with the CHEOPS space telescope. We also report the analysis of three unpublished sectors observed by the TESS space telescope (also in the visible), which represents 34 phase curves. Results. WASP-76 b displays an occultation of 260±11 and 152±10 ppm in TESS and CHEOPS bandpasses respectively. Depending on the composition assumed for the atmosphere and the data reduction used for the IR data, we derived geometric albedo estimates that range from 0.05 ± 0.023 to 0.146 ± 0.013 and from <0.13 to 0.189 ± 0.017 in the CHEOPS and TESS bandpasses, respectively. As expected from the IR phase curves, a low-order model of the phase curves does not yield any detectable asymmetry in the visible either. However, an empirical model allowing for sharper phase curve variations offers a hint of a flux excess before the occultation, with an amplitude of ∼40 ppm, an orbital offset of ∼−30◦ , and a width of ∼20◦ . We also constrained the orbital eccentricity of WASP-76 b to a value lower than 0.0067, with a 99.7% confidence level. This result contradicts earlier proposed scenarios aimed at explaining the asymmetry observed in high-resolution transit spectroscopy. Conclusions. In light of these findings, we hypothesise that WASP-76 b could have night-side clouds that extend predominantly towards its eastern limb. At this limb, the clouds would be associated with spherical droplets or spherically shaped aerosols of an unknown species, which would be responsible for a glory effect in the visible phase curves.

Cotton crops are vulnerable to a variety of sucking pests, which can severely impact plant health, yield, and fiber quality. These pests primarily feed on plant sap, extracting nutrients directly from the plant's vascular system. Here's a breakdown of some of the most significant sucking pests in cotton cultivation: Aphids: Cotton aphids or melon aphids can cause direct damage by sucking sap and indirect damage by secreting honeydew, which encourages sooty mold growth. This can interfere with photosynthesis and weaken the plant. Aphids can also transmit viral diseases. Whiteflies: Two species, the silverleaf whitefly and the bandedwinged whitefly, are particularly troublesome. They not only suck sap from the underside of leaves, causing yellowing and leaf drop, but their honeydew excretion promotes sooty mold and they can transmit several plant viruses. Thrips: While thrips can chew on plants, their primary damage to cotton is through sucking. They attack the cotton plant during its seedling stage, which can stunt growth and reduce vigor. Thrips are also capable of transmitting the Cotton Bud disease. Spider Mites: These are not insects but arachnids. Spider mites, such as the two-spotted spider mite, suck cell contents from the leaves, leading to speckled discoloration and potentially significant leaf loss if infestations are severe. Leafhoppers: Including various species, leafhoppers can cause direct damage through feeding, which results in leaf curling and stunted growth. They can also be vectors for plant diseases. Mealybugs: These pests are less common but can be problematic, especially in clustered planting conditions. They suck sap and secrete honeydew, which leads to sooty mold. Mealybugs can also spread viruses. Stink Bugs: Although primarily known for their chewing mouthparts, certain stink bugs can cause damage similar to sucking pests by injecting saliva into the plant and sucking out nutrients, leading to boll damage and stained lint. Management Strategies: Cultural Controls: This includes practices such as crop rotation, using resistant varieties, and managing planting and harvesting times to avoid peak pest populations. Biological Controls: Beneficial insects like lady beetles, lacewings, and predatory mites can naturally control sucking pest populations. Parasitic wasps also play a role in controlling aphid and whitefly populations. Chemical Controls: Insecticides may be used but should be chosen carefully to minimize resistance development and preserve beneficial insects. Systemic insecticides can be particularly effective against sucking pests. Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Combining multiple control strategies based on monitoring and thresholds to apply the most effective and environmentally sensitive approach. Effective management of sucking pests in cotton requires a thorough understanding of the pest species present, their life cycles, and the ecological balance of the field environment.

Presenter: Chen Li, PhD. Professor, Department of Computer Science, University of California Irvine Abstract Many data analytics projects have collaborators with complementary backgrounds, including biologists, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, and AI/ML experts. Many of them have limited experience to code, set up a computing infrastructure, and use MLmodels. Existing tools and services, such as email attachments, GitHub, and Google Drive are inefficient for sharing data and analyses. In this talk, we present an open source system called Texera that provides a cloud computing platform for collaborators to share data and analyses as workflows. After seven years of development, the system has a rich set of powerful features, such as shared editing, shared execution, version control, commenting, debugging, user-defined functions in multiple languages (e.g., Python, R, Java), and support of state-of-the-art AI/ML techniques. Its backend parallel engine enables scalable computation on large data sets using computing clusters. We will show a demo of the system, and present our vision supported by a recent NIH award, dkNET(NIDDK Information Network, https://dknet.org), to serve the diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolic diseases research communities through the FAIR sharing of data and knowledge. Mustard, as a crop, is susceptible to a variety of pests that can affect its growth and yield. Here’s a rundown of some common pests that target mustard plants: Aphids: These small, sap-sucking insects can cause significant damage by feeding on the leaves and stems. Aphids also excrete a sticky substance known as honeydew, which can lead to the growth of sooty mold on the plants. Flea Beetles: These tiny beetles jump like fleas when disturbed and chew small holes in the leaves. They are particularly damaging in the early growth stages of the plant. Cabbage Loopers: The larvae of a type of moth, these caterpillars are known for their distinctive looping movement. They chew large holes in the leaves and can defoliate plants if present in large numbers. Diamondback Moth Larvae: Another caterpillar pest, these larvae chew small holes in the leaves and can cause extensive damage, especially when infestations are heavy. Whiteflies: These are tiny, winged insects that feed on plant sap and can quickly become a problem in greenhouse or close planting conditions. Like aphids, they also secrete honeydew. Cutworms: These are the larvae of certain types of moths and are known for cutting young plants at the stem base at ground level. They are most destructive during the night. Root Maggots: The larvae of root maggot flies, these pests attack the roots of mustard plants, causing wilting and potentially killing young plants. Harlequin Bugs: These are colorful stink bugs that suck the sap from mustard plant stems and leaves, causing the leaves to become stippled, wilt, and eventually die if the infestation is severe. Mustard Sawfly: The larvae of the mustard sawfly can cause considerable defoliation, as they feed voraciously on the leaves. Clubroot: Caused by a fungus-like organism, clubroot affects the roots, causing them to swell and distort. While technically a disease, it is often associated with pest management because controlling it involves similar preventative strategies. Control Measures: Managing pests in mustard involves a combination of cultural, biological, and chemical methods. Crop rotation, resistant varieties, timely sowing, maintaining plant health, and using natural predators like ladybugs and parasitic wasps can help keep pest populations under control. Chemical pesticides should be used as a last resort due to their potential impact on the environment and non-target species.

Theoretical predictions and observational data indicate a class of sub-Neptune exoplanets may have water-rich interiors covered by hydrogen-dominated atmospheres. Provided suitable climate conditions, such planets could host surface liquid oceans. Motivated by recent JWST observations of K2-18 b, we self-consistently model the photochemistry and potential detectability of biogenic sulfur gases in the atmospheres of temperate sub-Neptune waterworlds for the first time. On Earth today, organic sulfur compounds produced by marine biota are rapidly destroyed by photochemical processes before they can accumulate to significant levels. Domagal-Goldman et al. suggest that detectable biogenic sulfur signatures could emerge in Archean-like atmospheres with higher biological production or low UV flux. In this study, we explore biogenic sulfur across a wide range of biological fluxes and stellar UV environments. Critically, the main photochemical sinks are absent on the nightside of tidally locked planets. To address this, we further perform experiments with a 3D general circulation model and a 2D photochemical model (VULCAN 2D) to simulate the global distribution of biogenic gases to investigate their terminator concentrations as seen via transmission spectroscopy. Our models indicate that biogenic sulfur gases can rise to potentially detectable levels on hydrogen-rich water worlds, but only for enhanced global biosulfur flux (20 times modern Earth’s flux). We find that it is challenging to identify DMS at 3.4 μm where it strongly overlaps with CH4, whereas it is more plausible to detect DMS and companion byproducts, ethylene (C2H4) and ethane (C2H6), in the mid-infrared between 9 and 13 μm.
