FDSH Students: Future Apple CEO’s?
Fort Dodge, IA - Mac computers line the wall as a small team of designers and programmers work together to de-
velop iPhone Apps.
Although this may look like a computer programming company, it is just another day in Senior High teacher Scott
Kehrberg’s third block class.
Kehrberg’s Computer Programming class exposes students to the new area of mobile programming. It teaches stu-
dents how to write and design applications for iPhone and iPod Touch devices. The class uses a hands-on approach
and advanced computer software such as XCode and the Objective C language, which is used by Apple program-
mers themselves. As a result of Kehrberg’s class, Senior High students now have their own published iPhone Apps.
The nine week course allows students to write and design an app that pertains to their own life. Golf player and
student Brandon Kearney eliminated the pencil and paper scorecard by creating “Golf Caddie Pro” for a simpler way
to manage one’s shots.
Other student applications include the Resistor Converter, the Tip Rater Calculator, and an app designed to manage
a student lunch account.
Students in Kehrberg’s class work as a team of young software designers rather than a group of individual students.
“The class is self-driven,” said Kehrberg. “Students come up with their own ideas, and we work together to turn
ideas into products.”
Kehrberg describes his class as “outside the book.” His class strives to deliver an active approach to computer pro-
gramming and design.
“My goal is that they [the students] can learn while creating a product they can be proud of,” said Kehrberg.

The iPhone Apps are available for purchase on the Apple iTunes store. The applications are 99 cents and after only a
few days on the market, the group has had multiple buyers.
Kehrberg says the acquired funds will be used for new equipment or a potential student scholarship fund.
