You must take apart the conventions and define them:
Romance – Boy + Girl, there are fallouts, then they make up, you have an idiot of a best friend,
family is involved.
Zombies – Brains, death, gore, horror, suspense.
Comedy – comedy supporting sidekick, idiotic comedy, verbal humour, visual humour, situation
comedy.
Genre is usually generated after common conventions appear time after time and the audience is
drawn in.
Conventions of soap:
Family feuds
Affairs between friends
Conflict – break ups, fall outs
Catharsis
Emotions – hatred, anger, love, sadness, rarely happiness: but you usually realise that it isn’t
going to stay for too long.
Violence
Multiple storylines that usually develop
