This document discusses various aspects of television channel idents and branding, including design, tempo, use of space and time, information vs entertainment focus, interaction with viewers, density of information, branding, packaging and repackaging, segmentation within scheduling, marketing, identity, and scheduling. Examples are provided for each topic to illustrate effective and ineffective approaches.
3. Screen Tempo
This is a good example of screen tempo,The ident uses fast
music with the fast dancing feet in time with the music. Its is
a good choice because the feet go perfectly in time with the
music. Also the pace of the ident is fast and a lot of
movement going on in the screen. The ident is good
because it brands the channel well and keeps the audience
interested. For me it is an interesting ident however it has
no crescendo and the music is constant and the dancing

In this ident is the complete opposite to the first one
because this has quite a slow and low tempo. There is
not much going on in this ident as it is quite simple, they
use hippos that rotate in circles and nothing else actually
happens. The sound in the background is a very relaxing
and calm tune to suit the slow tempo of the ident.
4. Space & Time
This is a very good example of an ident that plays with space and
time. This refers to weather an ident is set in the present time/past
or future. And weather it is in a real or fictional place. BBC 3 have
created a completely knew planet for their suit of idents and have
built it by mashing together lots of the fun elements of their channel
and random elements from popular culture. This links into their
target audience of being a young channel for young people and the
design of their world reflects this. This is a perfect example of how
designers can create interesting and new visuals specifically

This is a good example of an ident that takes the
opposite approach to space and time but still uses it effectively.
In this ident the world that we are set in is clearly rural England
as it is a dune setting for a BBC ident. To go with the target
audience for BBC 1 it is quite a cinematic and sophisticated
ident. With kite flying being seen as something for the adult
generation. The people who inhabit the ident are these people.
Adults and older people all having fun creating the circle with
the kites. This is in complete contrast to the other ident in many
ways. This is mainly due to the target audience but also the fact
that the "Kites" ident is in the real world and has to show what
the weather would have to be like to fly those kites. Whereas
the other can do anything it wants because its in a made up
world. However both are still effective idents.
5. Information & Entertainment Led
This is a very good example of an ident that is purely for entertainment
rather than information. Apart from the small MTV logo in the corner
there is no other hint as to what channel it is apart from the style the
ident is made in. Instead the ident focuses on following the Alice in
Wonderland figure around as she explores the interesting world that
she is in. I think that it is an effective ident because it draws the
audience in and really makes you want to follow her through this
land and discover what is going to happen. And even though there is
not an obvious thing showing that this is an MTV ident there is

This is an example of a suit of ident that is more information led than
entertainment. It is still entertaining but the main focus of the ident is on
the channels name and logo. All of the idents in the suit of idents use or
incorporate the logo as the main feature of the ident. Making interesting
graphics that use the logo as part of the ident. For example the ident that
is laid out like a Rubik's cube has all of the challenge letters on one of
the rotating plates. Then as they all turn round the logo is formed. It is
hard now in modern idents to find one that is not primarily lead by
entertainment but I think that these idents are a good example of idents
that use the information in a creative way to attract their audience and
keep there ident and channel in their mind.
6. Interaction with Viewers
This is a very good example of an ident that interacts with its audience to engage
them and make their ident memorable. The theme with this ident and the rest of
the suit that it belongs to was to have channel 4's logo embedded somewhere in
the ident and the audience tries to find it. Some of the idents are easier than
others and this really makes the audience engage with the ident. This is a very
good tactic for making an audience remember your channels idents. Because
the ident makes the audience work to figure it out they will remember it for
positive/negative reasons. I think that Channel 4's idents are one of the best
examples of this.

7. Density of Information
This is a good example of an ident that is very simple and does not have huge
amounts of visuals onscreen. This goes with the channels theme of being a premium
channel that is in HD so the ident reflects this. The ident is very clear with lots of
space throughout the ident. The information that is being portrayed to the audience
is just what channel you are watching so there is no clutter of lots of information with
TV listings. The theme of the ident is goingand a

I think that this ident is very effective at giving the audience the information that it
needs in a very simple, clear and stylish way.
9. Branding
For Branding I have chosen BBC 3, This is a good example of branding
because of their corporate color pink. All the BBC channels have
different colors set for the different number channels, For example BBC
1 is red and that is the channels set color. They do this because they
separate the channels so if you see an ident that is pink you would think

10. Packaging & Re-Packaging
ITV has changed their logos but still keeping there unique identity. They have rebranded the logos and the idents but still advertising as the same ITV channel
and produce the same programs. Their original idea was blue and now has
changed and re-branded to yellow.

11. Segmentation within Scheduling
The segmentation within scheduling is where and when the ident occurs. The idents occurs just
after a program has finished and and the start and also in the middle of the adverts. They
do this to promote the channel if people are watching the adverts.

12. Marketing
For Channel 4 they use idents in the middle of the adverts to market their
channel through a short animated clip, Normally they are around 15
second long and just advertise and market the channel brand to the
public. They also use the channel corporate color in the idents to
market the channel to that particular color.

13. Identity
The identify of a channel is the things that they use all
the time throughout the channel that keeps it
individual and its identity. The things that makes it
individual to other programs is the color of the logo,
this is key to how you keep your channels identity and
the logo different and original. Also the programs that
you show on your channel also is key with identity
because you could get a program that you think of
and you think of the channel that shows that program
and its identified.

14. Scheduling
Scheduling is about when they put certain programs on
at different times. This is because people may be at
work and wont be watching TV in the middle of the
day so they will put the programs aimed at older
people on at night time. The channels that are put on
in the morning will be the news. They wont book the
programs to come on in the middle of the because
people wont watch it and it will be pointless. Also the
age limit on some programs if they have rude images
or things to explicit they have to be on TV after 9 pm
because all the young kids will be asleep.
