Industry Challenge
The aerospace industry in Singapore has done well over
the last 10 years. With Asia expected to double its fleet of
aircraft by 2015, the Singapore aerospace industry is set
for greater growth.
According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore, there
are over 100 aerospace companies here, including established
multi-national corporations (MNCs) like GE Aviation Services
Operation, Honeywell, Messier-Dowty, Hamilton Sundstrand
and Pratt & Whitney, as well as prominent local players such
as Singapore Technologies Aerospace and SIA Engineering
Company.
To further solidify Singapore’s position as a leading aviation
hub, the Singapore government has committed to the
development of the Aerospace Park in Seletar, slated to be
ready by 2015.
With growth and expansion come challenges and uncertainties.
The aerospace industry constantly faces volatile externalities
such as rising and unstable operation costs, air-worthiness
issues and high levels of regulatory controls. Cost reduction
and faster turnaround time of Maintenance, Repair and
Overhaul (MRO) services are some measures to address these
challenges. MRO service providers are constantly required to
reduce costs, improve turnaround time, while maintaining
quality and adherence to regulations.
One of the problems that exacerbate cost and turnaround
problems MRO operations face is the lag in information
retrieval caused by a digital-paper gap.
A Complete Solution
The Document Solution for Aerospace Maintenance (DSAM) is
a critical component of the document management strategy
to streamline the MRO process of aerospace organizations.
It is an end-to-end document management solution that
improves productivity while reducing turnaround time and
regulatory risk.
DSAM Digitisation scans and automatically extracts important
data from the Repair Order and supporting documents.
This data can be directly exported to the existing ERP/MRO
System through the DSAM ERP/MRO interface, improving the
productivity of the data entry process.
Electronic copies are stored within DSAM Management,
creating a central repository for sharing, tracking and audit
purposes. DSAM Management also alerts users of document
receipts to facilitate downstream process flow. Repair manuals
can also be stored electronically within DSAM Management
for easy retrieval.

It also captures and transforms the shipping data into high
quality laser printed invoices and Airway Bills through DSAM
Printing.

Aerospace industry, DSAM also offers two key services to
improve the MRO process. DSAM Printing and Scanning
Services provide experienced onsite or offsite printing and
scanning services to expedite the MRO process in a timely,
accurate and cost effective fashion.

Solution
Fuji Xerox’s Document Solution for Aerospace Maintenance
(DSAM) was selected to plug the paper and digital gap.
DSAM digitises and stores the electronic image of shipping
documents and other key documents such as signed repair
reports and certificates. The electronic documents are
integrated with underlying SAP documents, through the
concept of virtual documents. Electronic distribution of
documents facilitates the efficient triggering of workflows
throughout a repair job.
To meet the regulatory requirements of the industry, our
solution tracked all document flows and actions to maintain
full traceability.
Benefits
DSAM eliminated the physical movement of paper for our
client. This reduced waiting time and as a result, improved
throughput in terms of repair jobs.
DSAM also improved the productivity of administrative staff
by eliminating non value-add activities such as photocopying,
filling and searching for paper documents.
With these favorable outcomes, our client could plan for
expansion without the need to increase headcount unnecessarily,
thereby achieving substantial cost savings. DSAM guaranteed
the traceability of documents – a critical requirement for our
client operating in a tightly regulated industry.
Challenges
Our client needed to improve the turnaround time of their
repair job by almost 50% to meet customer requirements,
and the demands of business growth.
A key cause of their excessive turnaround time is the movement
of paper documents throughout their operation. Despite being
on the SAP system, inefficiencies persisted, given the digital and
paper gap between the shipping documents and structured
information residing in SAP. The proposed solution must also
meet stringent requirements of the local aviation authority.

Based on repair part numbers, DSAM On Demand efficiently retrieves the Authorized Repair Certificate, Repair Quality checklist, Production Forms and relevant sections of the Repair Manual from DSAM Management and prints these documents. It also captures and transforms the shipping data into high quality laser printed invoices and Airway Bills through DSAM Printing. As the market leader in providing managed services to the Aerospace industry, DSAM also offers two key services to improve the MRO process. DSAM Printing and Scanning Services provide experienced onsite or offsite printing and scanning services to expedite the MRO process in a timely, accurate and cost effective fashion.
