Comments: According to the journal article, Sensory and Chemical Analysis of ‘Shackleton’s’ Mackinlay Scotch Whisky by James Pryde,
et al, this re-creation is a lightly peated malt whisky matured in American white oak sherry or wine casks. It contains whiskies from
Speyside, the Islands, the Highlands, and some rare 1983 Glen Mhor . Whyte and Mackay produced 50,000 bottles. This distillate is more
novelty than good whisky. Over-priced, over-hyped…but it is a bit of fun and if you have an opportunity to sip a dram, well this is a great
opportunity for story-telling. As I develop my skills in the area of whisky appreciation, my neighborhood adult beverage depot store
manager and I learned that we share a love of good whisky. One day while visiting his establishment, he quickly pulled me aside and we
walked to a back room. There, with a big smile on his face, he told me the story of Shackleton’s Mackinlay Scotch Whisky, and then
poured me a wee sample. Although not one of my favorite whiskies, it did provide an opportunity for two whisky connoisseurs to come
together, experience the moment, share a story and marvel at the unending pleasures provided by this aqua vita.
