10. In IES Antonio de Nebrija there are students coming from 5 different villages in
“La Serena” apart from Zalamea; but Retamal is located in a different region called
“Campiña Sur”, this is why it is farther (26 km) from Zalamea than the other villages.

Although it is geographically closer to La Serena, the appellation “Llerena”

The castle of Zalamea was built around
the year 466. When the Visigoth Kings
arrived, they established the Spanish Court
in it. It’s got three cylindrical towers and
a heptagonal tower called “Carlos V”.

It is 24 metres high and it is a
unique funeral memorial,
possibly the most important in
the world. It was raised in the
year 103 in Honour of the
emperor Trajan. It is located in
Constitution Square, but first it
was located outside the walls
of the city of Iulipa.
42. Cancho Roano is an archaeological site
located three miles from Zalamea in the
direction of Quintana de la Serena, in a
small valley along the stream Cagancha.
It is the best preserved Tartessian site. It
dates back to the XI century BCE,
although the building was expanded and
modified in later centuries.
43. Doctor Richard Freund theorizes that
Cancho Roano was a "memorial city"
designed to serve as a ceremonial
representation of the lost city of
Tartessos, which, in Freund's theory,
was also Atlantis. Freund argued that a
stele found at Cancho Roano displayed

matches Plato's description of Atlantis
