Q3 - Audience Feedback
1. Q3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?
2. Feedback Gained During The Editing Process
Feedback Analysis
Half way through the construction of our music video we found that it didn’t keep audiences involved. Some students told
us that some of the shots were too long. Therefore we decided to shorten shots and add more variety of shots from
different areas so the audience did not get bored of seeing a repetition of the same shot.
We also found that some shots lacked colour and brightness. Students noticed this and thankfully made us aware of this
and suggested that it would maybe look more effective if brighter lighting was used. Therefore the group decided to go out
and shoot some more footage that had brighter lighting to continue the natural ‘sunny’ look.
3. During the construction of our products we often asked people from our targeted audience
to have a look and give us views on how we can improve them and make them more
effective. During the editing of my panel of the Digipak I asked several people at different
intervals through editing to tell me what they thought. For example, at one stage I was told
that the artist and his girlfriend should be made to stand our more against the background
and the brightness and sharpness of their figures should be darker.
I also asked a graphics student to give me their views. I found that the hills needed to be
further blended into the sky, so the sky looks natural. An ordinary college student may not
have noticed this however the graphics student did. I felt that it was essential to change this
as I wanted the panel to be the best as it could.
When constructing our magazine adverts we also got feedback from other media groups to
see what was effective and what was not. Magazine advert 2 initially had the image of the
album below the title of the album and artist name (top right), but when some students
viewed this they felt that the advert would look better if positioned somewhere else – it
would be less intrusive. Therefore the image was moved to the bottom middle.
Throughout the process of editing I and the rest of the group have tried to get audience
input as we go along to make sure that it is fulfilling the needs of our targeted audience. We
used this feedback to create at a better product that is more likely to succeed.

4. We used different methods of gaining feedback for our final products. We added our music video to YouTube
and found that a few people left comments. We also emailed friends and family with the list of questions and the
link to our blog. We also asked people in college to view the video and ancillary products in our presence and
hand fill in questionnaires. This enabled us to get a sample of results gained in different ways and also allowed
us to gain a wider audience. Majority of participants who took part in our questionnaires were both male and
female aged from 17-26 (maybe even older) so they reflect our target audience well.
In terms of the music video we found that 100% of those we questioned felt t hat the music video was typical
because of its visuals (mixture of performance and narrative) and the editing/pace. They felt that it was typical
because it was able to tell a story within several minutes. Also the consistent change between performance and
narrative allows audiences to identify that it is a music video. Although the audience felt that it was a typical
music video, they felt that the theme is different to what you would find in other indie products. It is very natural
and rural and different to the urban, gritty settings and tones often used in indie genre. Despite the fact that
some elements has been altered from typical indie music videos such as pace of shots, lighting and setting
audiences felt that the music video worked well and was very effective. These slight differences made it more
intriguing to watch. Once again 100% of our audience felt that the music video worked well alongside the music
and worked well with the lyrics.

5. When analyzing results of what audiences felt was effective, several people mentioned the shot of Jess’
eye that dissolves into the sky. Audiences felt that it looked effective and the length of the shot fits
perfectly with the lyrics at that point. Audiences were also impressed by how the video is effective even
though it is simple and has not got any extreme editing.
During our feedback we did however find some downfalls in our music video that the audience felt would
look better if altered. For example, some people felt that the lighting used in the indoor shots would look
more effective if it was brighter. They would also prefer it if there was a use of more vibrant colors
especially for the optimistic narrative.
Some people also wanted more close ups of the couple and less close ups of the artist and his guitar.
These are all elements that we could easily change in our music video if we were able to go back and
edit. We have received a lot of constructive criticism from which we are aware that our product could
become stronger but we are pleased that it generally satisfied our audience.

6. When audiences viewed our ancillary products we found that they felt that they linked well to the music
video as the theme was consistent and coherent.
People liked the Digipak as they felt that the album art was creative and artistic and different to what you
often find in other indie products. The artistic visuals draw audiences to view the album which may possibly
lead to purchasing. We found that 65% of our questioned audience would purchase the album if they saw it
in stores (based merely on the album art).
Some people however did feel that there should be more use of images of the artist as when looking at the
album cover the audience was not aware who the artist is. Therefore it may have been a good idea to add
an image of the artist on the cover or the back cover to promote him and allow him to be recognized
especially as he is a new artist. Our strategy may have worked better for an established star.

7. I thought it would be a good idea to see which of the two adverts attract more attention. I asked 10 participants from our
targeted age to have a look at both advertisements and asked them which appeals to them more. 6/10 preferred magazine
advertisement 1 (autumn leaves) and 4/10 preferred magazine advertisement 2 (green summer leaves).
When asked why they preferred one more than the other we found that some people preferred more simplistic and basic
designs and artwork whereas others liked something that was creative and stood out against the rest.
Audiences felt that the variance between the two adverts worked well in attracting different audiences and although the
colours and fonts were altered between the two, the theme and brand image was kept the same.

How has audience feedback helped?
Audience feedback has helped throughout the construction of our products. It has allowed us to
become aware of things we could improve during the production and has allowed to become aware of
things that we could have done differently to make our product stronger if we had time to develop our
products.
The feedback allowed us to make changed as we went along to fit the needs of our targeted audience.
It was vital that what we created pleased the audience and was up to their standard.
From our end of project feedback we have noticed what parts of our products are strong (such as
album art) and some parts can possibly be improved (use of colour in music video). We now know that
if we were to create these products again what we would do differently in order to make our product
even stronger.
Overall, i feel that our products have largely succeeded as intended and have captured the attention of
our targeted audience.
