So that’s the goalTransform hw-defined datacenter services into sw-defined servicesAccessed via software, and controlled via software.Result - services that are programmatic, scalable, and readily automated.
So we can RESTORE BALANCE on the HARDWARE SIDE…But what about the SOFTWARE SIDE?Here the CLOUD CHANGES THINGS as well.ALL CLOUDS are built AROUND VIRTUALIZED SERVERSThe OLD PARADIGM of managing SLAs STATICALLY AND MANUALLY is LONGER WORKS<CLICK>In a VIRTUALIZED CLOUD applications are DYNAMICApplications MOVE AROUND in a virtualized pool of compute resourceIt is NO LONGER POSSIBLE to GUESS HOW MANY DRIVES are needed to MEET SLAs In the CLOUD, the STORAGE SYSTEM must DYNAMICALLY tune the DATA SET to meet ONGOING CHANGES in DEMANDHOT DATA is moved to HIGH PERFORMANCE SSDsWhile COLD DATA is moved to HIGH CAPACITY DISKSAnd of course which data is HOT and which data is COLD changes all the time. The storage system must be SMART ENOUGH to figure this out and DO THE RIGHT THING!That is why VNX has - at its core – the concept of SELF OPTIMIZING STORAGE POOLSALL 100% AUTOMATED!<CLICK>
The resulting solution is the EMC VNX Storage Analytics Suite, which includes two components, the first of which is a light version of VMware’s vCenter Operations Manager (vC Ops) Enterprise tool, which is specifically built to provide storage-related analytics. You can still map your VM infrastructure (like Unisphere) however the most significant portion of the tool is the storage-related metrics and analytics. The second component is the EMC VNX Connector which includes the adapter that feeds the necessary VNX storage metrics into vC Ops and the integrated customized dashboards that provide performance and capacity metrics, proactive information to help administrators make informed decisions, heat maps etc.A single tool that helps admins to pinpoint the problem, diagnose it and take action to fix the problem.
You can view storage systems, and within those systems you can also see the subcomponents in a hierarchal format. These relationships enable the administrator to quickly view the most relevant anomalies and resolve issues quickly.
To make management easier we have deep integrations into vSphere and Xen Desktop. These Virtual Storage Integrators which are FREE allow users to dramatically simplify their environments by simplifying tasks such as creation and registration of VM’s and Rapid provisioning, rapid cloning of the vm images.

EMC is also announcing new app-sync capabilities. In terms of delivering more integrated application aware management, this allows customers to have integration into the data management environments such as Microsoft Exchange and Sequel, so they have integrated data protection capabilities.
EMC AppSync will offer a simple, self-service SLA-driven approach for protecting virtualized Microsoft applications in VNX deployments. Virtual environments are dynamic, and AppSync responds by following the application as moves within the infrastructure - assuring SLAs are maintained. After defining service plans (e.g. gold = synchronous replication), application owners can protect and and make space-efficient copies of production data without involving IT and recover data quickly with item-level granularity. AppSync provides an application protection monitoring service that generates alerts when the SLAs are not met.

EMC sees that customers also want more flexibility for how they get to the cloud. With that, many of EMC partners are delivering the best of breed components. EMC has a highly curated offering called Vblock — the integration of converged infrastructure, network compute, and storage — but EMC challenged itself with the question, "Is there a way to deliver a solution in-between proven infrastructure?" EMC is delighted to answer that question with VSPEX.
Based on VCE’s experience in building Vblocks and talking to customers, we estimate that customers will save approximately 60 to 90 days by buying a Vblock versus building it themselves. This expands on the previous slide. Is a three month time saving, one number to call for support in a pre-built, pre-tested and optimized platform valuable to your customer? While the enterprise may be capable of doing the integration, wouldn’t the enterprise rather optimize data and applications?
Note to Presenter: View in Slide Show mode for animation.Lets now talk about ManagementAn important capability is VMware vCenter Server integration with UIM/P, which synchronizes ESX and ESXi clusters into vCenter Server for comprehensive, aligned management. Unified Infrastructure Manager/P is part of VMware’s“Zero-Touch Infrastructure.”

Per-VM data services on storage systemsOur goal is to provide customers an option to use per-VM data services on the storage systems So, we want to build a framework where we can offload ANY per-VM data operations to the storage arrayAnd we want to do it with minimal disruption to existing processes or infrastructureThe problem with achieving this goal is that storage arrays don’t think VMDKs, they think LUNs or volumes. So there’s granulairty mismatch between vSphere and storage. We want the storage systems to also think VMDKs
