What is a fashion show
?
Definition of a fashion show:
 ‘‘A fashion show is a biannual presentation
of a new clothing collection on moving bodies
for an audience.’’
 A fashion show is an event put on by a
fashion designer to showcase their upcoming
line of clothing during Fashion Week.
 The runway is Parisian idea, forming in 19th-century
France, During this time in France, couture salons in Paris
hosted events to showcase certain fashions.
 As “fashion parades.” In the beginning of runway modeling,
only a small and select group of people were invited to the
show.
 In fact, photographers weren’t invited to fashion shows
until the late 1940s.
 The lack of photography evidence is one of the reasons
why we have little information about the origins of runway
modeling.
 In fashion, a runway, catwalk or ramp is a narrow,
usually flat platform that runs into an auditorium or
between sections of an outdoor seating area, used by
models to demonstrate clothing and accessories during
a fashion show.
Fashion show staging
 Stage:- is the plat form that the models
enter
 Runway:- is the long platform that
extends into the audience
T:- is additional staging, running
perpendicular to the runway
 The entrance to the runway is also very
important for a visually pleasing
presentations.
 This version makes room for one
entrance onto the stage in the centre
This design using the flats provides
two entrances onto the stage.
The two entrances give more space
for models to move around on either
side before they get to the main
runway.
This type of design also assists to
present logo or other designers in the
centre of the run way
Stage layout for a fashion show
• These are some possible shapes for the
stage.
• It will largely depend on your back stage
area and where the entrance to the
catwalk is.
Types of ‘fashion’show
presentations:
• Formal shows
• Department shows
• Designertrunk shows
• Informal modeling
Formal FashionShows:
Require a great deal of advanced planning:
o booking models & fittings
o arranging for a runway
o lighting, microphones, music, sound etc.
The length of the show is generally 30 minutes to one hour
Clothes are usually grouped according to colour, styling or other
visual criteria, while models & music are selected to
complement the set and mood.

generate immediate sales. Usually a platform is set up directly in the
storethat carriesthe clothes.
TYPESOF FASHION SHOWS

• A casual presentation of garments and accessories on models is
an informal fashion show.
• In this type of fashion show no theatrical elements such as
music, lighting or runway are used.
• while there are no special staging requirements for informal
fashion shows, props may be used to enhance the image of the
garments being featured.
• selling is simply left to the model who walks through the store
sales floor, manufacturers showroom, or restaurant.
• this type of fashion show requires very little preparation
compared to the production and formal runway shows.
