How to monitor unknown third party code? One of the hardest challenges we face running Clever Cloud, apart from the impressive scale we face with hundreds of new applications per week, is the monitoring of unknown tech stacks. The first goal of rebuilding the monitoring platform was to accommodate the immutable infrastructure pattern that generates lots of ephemeral hosts every minute. The traditional approach is to focus on VMs or hosts, not applications. We needed to shift this into an approach of auto-discovery of metrics to monitor, allowing third party code to publish new items. This talk explains our journey in building Clever Cloud Metrics stack, heavily based on Warp10 (Kafka/Hadoop/Storm based) to deliver developer efficiency and trustability to our clients applications.

OSGi Community Event 2017 Presentation by Christian Schneider [Adobe] Reactive frameworks allow to implement non blocking asynchronous processing in a convenient way. This talk explores how to apply reactive patterns to typical use cases on OSGi like REST services, MQTT Message processing, computations over sliding windows. We combine messaging and reactor.io streams like also used in Spring 5 to create services that are highly scalable while not tying the user to the technologies being used. The presented reactive components framework allows to abstract from the messaging technologies using OSGi services. These offer standard Publishers and Subscribers that work nicely with any reactive framework based on the reactive streams API. This allows to create integrations like with Apache Camel but in a much leaner and OSGi compliant way.

ComputeNext started 3 years ago to develop the first open marketplace for cloud computing services. We started by using the technologies we were most familiar with - C# and SQL Server, and our initial architecture and implementation was based on these technologies. Over time, we have progressively introduced more open source elements, including MongoDB, RabbitMQ and Node.js. Now we are at the point where most of our back-end services rely on Node.js.
