1 Introduction & background
Problem:
How can NUI technologies be integrated to broader game categories?
Hypothesis:
NUI technologies can replace traditional game interaction
by simulating all the manipulations in games.
Purpose:
1 inspire game designers and us to design future game modes for NUI games,
2 adapting NUI for existing game genres.
Goal (one slide):
1 find useful NUI technologies available (or to be) for broader game categories.
2 find the methods for replacing or enhancing the existing manipulations with NUI.
2 Methods & Methodologies
Qualitative method.
1 Philosophical assumptions: interpretivism
Via social constructions. get basic facts about the situation
2 Analytical research method :
validating hypothesis; analyze the materials
to make an evaluation
3 Inductive approach (reasoning):
gain an understanding of phenomenon
& establishing different views of the phenomenon.
4 Research design: Literature review
5 Data collection: Language and Text
for interpreting discourse and conversations, and meanings in texts and documents.
6 Data Analysis: Narrative Analysis concerns literary discussion and analysis.
7 Quality Assurrance: (See discussion part)
3 Data collection
sampling:top class research literatures, articles, cases, videos online
selection by keywords: human computer interaction, natural user interface,
eye tracking, speech recognition, NLP, muscle-computer interface, Brain computer
interface, body motion interaction, ultrasound, game interaction, user experience,
etc..
location: online, including Google, google scholar, KTHB Primo, Springer, etc.
Criteria: 1. feasible real world application & ongoing research;
2. active user control interactions rather than passive ones;
to exclude some results.
4 Data analysis
1. Supplement the “advantage and disadvantage” part with our analysis
2. Match the games manipulations with collected NUI technologies
5 Results
1. Eye tracking
2. Speech control (unique for possibility to replace keyboard)
3. Brain computer interface(promising)
4. Image-based body motion interaction(mature, realized a large number of manipulations)
5. Muscle-computer interface(promising)
6. Ultrasound interaction(promising)
6 Discussion
1. With the combination of them, we can realize most
manipulations in traditional games.
2.They do have some flaws which limits the application of
them.
3.Most NUI games papers ignore the potential of
designing NUI games for disabled people.
4.Keyboard still has no perfect alternatives.
7 Quality assurances/Sustainability
Reliability: based on the reliability of the papers(top journals in the fields)
Validity: Checking the study’s research internally and externally validity
Data sources are reliable and valid
method of data analysis matches our data collection method,
results are meaningful
Replicability: the research may not be replicable, due to researchers’ experience,
background and the reviewed literature
Sustainability: the research is sustainable
Conclusions, Future work
NUI technologies can be applied in traditional games,
there is no interaction problem in most cases expect
online games.
This conclusion may help game designers, our future
work could be designing NUI games and participating
the optimization of NUI technologies.
Thanks!
