Precipitation Titrations
Precipitation titrations are based on reactions that yield ionic compounds of limited
solubility.
Precipitation titrimetry is one of the oldest analytical techniques, dating back to the
mid 1800s.
The slow rate at which most precipitates form, however, limits the number of
precipitating agents that can be used in titrations to a handful.
We limit our discussion here to the most widely used and important precipitating
reagent, silver nitrate, which is used for the determination of the halogens, the halogen
like anions, mercaptans, fatty acids, and several divalent inorganic anions.
Titrations with silver nitrate are sometimes called argentometric titrations.
Titration Curves
The titration curve for a precipitation titration follows the change in either the analyte’s or
titrant’s concentration as a function of the volume of titrant. For example,

as a function of the titrant’s volume.IporAgptitration curve may be a plot ofThe

The Effect of Concentration on Titration Curves
From table and figure below we discussed the effect of concentration on titration
curves.
Titration curve for (A), 50.00 mL of 0.05000 M NaCl titrated with 0.1000 M AgNO3, and
(B), 50.00 mL of 0.00500 M NaCl titrated with 0.01000 M AgNO3.

Completeness on Titration CurveThe Effect of Reaction
Effect of reaction completeness on precipitation titration curves.
For each curve, 50.00 mL of a 0.0500 M solution of the anion was titrated with 0.1000 M
AgNO3.
Note that smaller values of Ksp give much sharper breaks at the end point.
Methods for Selecting, locating andevaluating the End Point of precipitation titration:
1) Finding the End Point with a Visual Indicator:
Mohr Method
Volhard Method
Fajans’ Method
2) Finding the End Point Potentiometrically:
Another method for locating the end point of a precipitation titration is to monitor the
change in concentration for the analyte or titrant (either pCl or pAg ) with an
appropriate electrode and a potentiometer(using an ion-selective electrode).

Indicators Reacting with the Titrant:
The first type Reaction: Indicators reacting with the Titrant to forms a colored
precipitate with the titrant when the titrant is in excess.
Such as Mohr and Volhard methods
The second type Reaction: Called an adsorption indicator, suddenly becomes
adsorbed on the precipitate at the equivalence point owing to a change in property
of the precipitate at the equivalence point, and the color of the indicator changes
when it is adsorbed. Such as Fajans’ Method
Before the equivalence point AgCl: Cl− ::Na+
After the equivalence point AgCl: Ag+ ::In−

Quantitative Applications
Precipitation titrimetry is rarely listed as a standard method of analysis, but may still be
other methods.useful as a secondary analytical method for verifying results obtained by
