- Management errors are pervasive. The infonectics report states that human errors contribute to almost 20% of downtime. One of the most publicized incident was the one back in 2001 when Microsoft’s websites were down for almost 23 hours and the cause of that was a DNS configuration problem. This affected millions of users and cause Microsoft a lot of embarrassment. One of the network Admins said that – “quote” GTM provides organizations the tools to reduce management overhead, errors and improve operational efficiency……next slide..
- application no longer just one element. It’s a collection of disparate cooperating services and devices that all feed into what a business designates as an application. - One Thought: Today’s approach is Manual which is Error Prone, Slow and is too costly Whenever a service goes down , the network administrator has to comb through the list of all the services one by one to determine the dependencies so that he can shut those down as well. Imagine doing this over thousands of services and multiple sites and the complexity grows quickly becomes unmanageable. Needless to say that in the process of manually managing your infrastructure, a lot of errors get introduced. This is a very risky proposition because any mistakes that are made will now get proliferated globally and can cause some serious problems. Something every Network Administrator dreads! - GTM solves this problem by binding cooperative and disparate services together to effectively deliver a multi –service application. GTM automates the process of tracking and managing the dependencies between individual application services and helps achieve HIGH availability, persistence and maintenance for these applications. - This is an online car site and they have thousands of dependant application services across multiple sites. What they were tying to do was shut down an application and its related services in one DC and do maintenance on those servers without either shutting down that entire DC or shutting down the service i.e they wanted that application and its related services to be served out of a different DC until the maintenance was complete. The challenge they were facing was that they had to go through a long list of manual procedures to perform maintenance on their applications. This manual process was: Slow – had to look at all these dependencies and track them Error prone – A lot of dependencies got overlooked Costly – Need a lot of people to do this task Downtime costs – No instantaneous failover , downtime of the application F5 Solution- With GTM they were able to Track and manage these dependencies automatically -less errors, efficient, faster, less people needed to do it (reduced management overhead) One Click failover – reduced downtime costs Create maintenance policies for failover – reduced management overhead
- This is a banking customer you all know and have heard of: Fidelity Their challenge was that their customers were experiencing broken sessions, lost data and a lot of frustration while trying to access their 401K portfolio. The customers would log into their 401k Portfolio and make changes to their stock elections. After a period of inactivity, if the same customer came back to make changes to their Mutual fund selections, they would get redirected to a different DC and the stock selection information was missing. This was causing the application to fail because, the mutual fund service was dependant on the stock service to track information on the types of stock chosen so that the mutual fund service could use that information to provide similar fund choices. There was no way of tracking the dependency between the 2 services and using te state of the application to redirect the user to the same DC where the stock information was available This was causing the organizations Frustrated clientele, loss of business Login again – security overhead Lost, corrupted data With GTM they were able to: Track the application state and the dependencies between services so that they could redirect customers to the right DC. Now when the customer came back, client history was remembered they were redirected to the same DC where the stock information was available No more frustrated clients– better end user experience No more lost business No more broken sessions- data integrity No security overhead Reduced management overhead Let us look at some of the other challenges facing organizations today……next slide
