After a mass shooting in 2020, the Canadian government passed a ban on assault-style
weapons. Gun restrictions for Canadian civilians is a big step toward reducing gun
violence. Gun rights groups said the law unfairly harmed gun owners and don’t believe
that the right can be regulated. Nevertheless, that’s not how we treat constitutional rights
- whether it is freedom of speech, religion and expression - they are all subject to
regulation. Moreover, some people think owning a gun is for self-defence. However, the
lawful reason to get a gun is for sport – not for protection. In fact, the number of
homicides is raising globally. Indeed, more gun regulations mean fewer guns in the
civilians’ hands, and fewer civilians will be hurt. Canada’s gun control not only prevents
gun violence but also provides a lesson about what it takes to get gun control measures
enacted as an example for other countries, the United States for instance. In my opinion,
when the harm is greater than the benefits, then Canadian civilians should not be allowed
own guns.

yes
they are really bad for your health
they cause cancer
they smell bad
they are expensive
no
the government shouldn’t tell people how to live
sets a bad precedent – what else can the government decide for us?
they aren’t the worst threat to our health – cardiovascular health is a bigger killer
we have to ask why the government doesn’t address that issue
no – it’s a punitive approach rather than a supportive approach, people who smoke
cigarettes aren’t bad people, but they might need help to make different choices for
themselves
22. 23
my idea: Government action that punishes smokers represents a lack of meaningful
action towards long term reduction in health costs. We would use our money more
effectively if we provided incentives to quit than if we punished people for not
complying.
first draft
Smoking can be seen everywhere and we all have smokers in our lives, so the
health problems associated with smoking seem highly significant. The government
should help people quit smoking rather than only make smoking illegal.
counter-argument rebuttal
People get cancer from smoking Cardiovascular disease is a larger killer
People choose to smoke Smoking is addictive and people need help
to quit.
