Each of us , as an adult human being, is equipped with our own instinct to be adapted with
the new environment or at least to respect the others around us. Also, I believe any
cafeteria or restaurant has its own rules to make sure every customer can enjoy the best
services and relax environment when being there. So, it is expected that a customer when
being in a cafeteria or a restaurant or in a public area will respect others. By doing that
they are also respect themselves, I believe. Everyone has their own culture. Let’s imagine
one goes to a cafeteria or a public area and brings his/her own culture there without
caring about the others or even the rules of that specific area, how do you feel?
Specifically, one comes to a café listening to his own music loudly without headphone,
how do you feel? Even though the music is really cool, or very popular, it is not proper to
do it in a public area or in a café or a restaurant, where all customers expect to have at
least enough private room or environment to enjoy the services there.
10. 11
Playing music in public places happens around us. Actually, like me, when I face this
problem. Always confuse how to deal with, so I ask twenty friends. Some of them just bear
that. They left them alone, and escape immediately. But some of them enjoy that
since they like listening random music. In my opinion, I will choose different ways to deal
with that, base on the situation. For example, if some one played music in the public area
of the hospital even though in the public eating area. I will go to talk with them directly,
and said could you please turn down or could you please use EarPods to enjoy your
music. I will also give the reason that is the patients who need to bear their pain or hurt
from the illness. We should take care of them. But if they play in the public park. I will not
bother them. They have right to enjoy their lives. So, I think that problem maybe everyone
will face it. But we should chose the better way to deal with them. We would like everyone
who live in Canada is happy.
11. 12
We should all respect other people culture and habits, as long as we don’t feel upset
about it. Nevertheless, it is our right to ask the person to lower volume in public spaces,
such as café. Music lovers are often unaware of the loudness of their music; moreover, if
they are listening to their favourite song. Imagine that you are at café with old friend, and
trying to have conversation, but music at the next table is too loud that you can`t even
hear your own thoughts. Considering the fact that it is inappropriate to listen to music
loudly in a café, it is quite all right if you react to the situation politely. Canada is the land
of diversity; in other words, it is a country of mixed nations and cultures so we should all
respect each other differences, but we also should act responsibly especially in public
spaces.

The thesis statement shows what the paragraph is about. In essays (longer form of
writing), the thesis statement is given at the beginning of the essay, and each paragraph
has it’s own topic sentence. Since we’re only writing one paragraph, we will only have a
thesis statement. In an essay, the thesis statement would be a more general statement,
and the topic sentences would relate to it and have a smaller scope. Each topic sentence
would be have it’s own paragraph!

thesis statement: Although traffic conditions can be intimidating, cyclists should use the
road rather than the sidewalk because it’s safer for everyone.
topic sentence one: Cyclists on the sidewalk are faster than pedestrians, and this is
dangerous for both groups.
topic sentence two: Cyclists should follow the rules of the road because they’re vehicles,
not pedestrians.
topic sentence three: The more cyclists on the road, the more drivers and pedestrians will
get used to sharing the road, and harmony will increase.

The paragraphs you write in these workshops will have only a thesis statement, not a
thesis statement and a topic sentence.
thesis statement: Although traffic conditions can be intimidating, cyclists should use the
road rather than the sidewalk because it’s safer for everyone.
supporting idea one: cyclists need to get comfortable being on the road.
supporting idea two: cars need to get comfortable with cyclists sharing the road.

Thesis statements can either include the contrasting idea or not – that’s the choice of the
writer. If you include the contrasting idea, make it the subordinate clause.
Despite heavy rain this spring, farmers are anticipating a normal summer because of the
high temperatures predicted in June and July.
Add the contrasting viewpoint to these statements. You can rewrite the portion given to
you if needed.
1) Doctors or family members should never be allowed to “pull the plug”.
A) Although some people believe that doctors and family members should never be
allowed to “pull the plug”, I believe that it is sometimes more humane to do so.
B) Even though some people want doctors or family members to preserve life any way
they can, I believe that it is sometimes more human to “pull the plug”.
C) While some people believe that doctors and family members should choose when to
end someone’s life, I believe that no one should decide when to end another person’s life.
C)
20. 21
Add the contrasting viewpoint to these statements. You can rewrite the portion
given to you if needed.
1. The sale of music with lyrics that degrades woman should be prohibited.
2. Television is the worst invention of modern times.
3. Environmental protection laws go too far.
4. The advertising industry performs many public services.
5. Write your own example of a thesis statement with contrasting ideas.
23. 24
A key element of persuasive writing is making rebuttals, or rebuking the counter
argument. A rebuttal is when you respond to a different opinion in an effort to show your
own opinion is correct.
example 1
Dogs are better pets than cats because they’re smarter.
rebuttal: Dogs are more work to care for which makes cats the better pet.
example 2
The age of voting in Canada should be raised.
rebuttal: The age of voting should remain at eighteen to encourage participation in social
issues, and a lifelong interest in politics.
24. 25
Write a rebuttal for these sentences.
1. Fixing potholes is less important than funding free summer programs for kids.
2. Spraying for mosquitos in Winnipeg is a good idea.
3. University shouldn’t be free.
4. Carrying an umbrella is worse than sometimes getting caught in the rain.

29. Writing Prompt: Is it worthwhile to
explore space?
30
https://www.toonpool.com/cartoons/the%20tourists_15404
30. 31
Even before astronauts landed on the moon, we have been curious about space;
nevertheless, not everyone is in support of space exploration. Exploring space may transfer
our problems on Earth into a new arena; nonetheless, it is worthwhile to explore space
because of the valuable scientific information we will learn. Those opposed say that we
want to explore space to own it and exploit it rather than to learn about it. Additionally,
there are problems to solve on Earth first before we start investing time and money going
into space. Even if discoveries aren’t made with pure intentions, it doesn’t make the
knowledge gained any less useful. Realistically, the attention and money devoted to space
exploration wouldn’t be redirected towards eliminating issues such as poverty and disease.
Gaining knowledge about the universe is valuable and will help humans better understand
the physical and chemical forces on Earth. We are exploring space so we will bring the
worst, our greed, and the best, our intelligence, with us to this new frontier.
