The Difference Between a DOT and non-DOT Pre-Employment Drug
Test
An employment drug screening is
administered to avoid the
negative effects from substance
abuse in the workplace, such as
chronic lateness or absence, poor
productivity and behavioral
problems. For the Department of
Transportation (DOT) employees,
a drug screening is even more
important due to the sensitive, and even dangerous, nature of the jobs that
the employees perform when handling and operating heavy machinery and
vehicles.
Substance abuse is a serious problem for an employee because a potential
loss of time, accident or health problems cost U.S. companies nearly $100
billion dollars annually, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, and at
the DOT, employees encounter ample opportunities to test judgment and
physical acumen, qualities that are compromised by drug or alcohol use.
The United States Congress passed the Omnibus Transportation Employee
Testing Act in 1991 that requires DOT to test safety-sensitive transportation
employees. Safety-sensitive DOT employees that work with vehicle
maintenance or operation are required to complete a drug screening, such
as those repairing a pipeline, driving a truck, operating a train, ferry or

Mishandling heavy machinery could endanger the employee, co-workers and
the public, a consequence that a pre-employment drug screen could prevent
due to the high prevalence of substance abuse related accidents and injuries
in the workplace.
A standard employer drug screening will consist of testing for a panel of five
common substances, including marijuana (THC), opiates (codeine and
morphine), cocaine, PCP, and amphetamines (methamphetamine), while a

The DOT drug screening tests for basic five panel substances.
The steps include:
1. Employee candidate notification that a drug screening is required.
2. Report immediately to the collection site
3. Urine collection
4. Lab testing
5. Medical review
6. Verified results
DOT may also administer post-accident or random drug screening by request
during an employee's tenure with the organization.
Pre-employment candidates and employees cannot refuse a drug screening
request, which constitutes not appearing at the appointment time or
informing personnel that testing will not be completed.
The price range for a drug screening is generally between $50 and $70,
which includes sample collection, laboratory assessment, a Medical Review
Officer's services and results delivery. The return on investment in the case
of DOT is well-supported in the avoidance of the danger resulting from
