The document discusses a music video concept that uses intertextual references from another video showing an animal in costume behind bars. The concept video will feature a character called "the ladies man" in a lion costume to suggest he is tough, but he will ultimately be beaten by a girl. It analyzes shots from a sample video featuring an elephant escaping from behind bars, being chased, and signaling its desire to travel to an airport, applying various film theory concepts. The overall concept is to have contradicting visuals and music about escaping to paradise.
1. This is a medium shot of a elephant behind bars.
In this image you can see that there is someone in
a animal costume. In our music video we would
like to use this as intertexual reference as we
would like our character ”the ladies man” in a
animal costume.
This video is clearly a concept based video. I would
like to make my music video a concept based video
and this is why I think using intertextual references
from this particular video would be good as our
music video will also be contradicting like this
music video, as we will have our character in a lion
costume suggesting to the audience that he is
fierce and tough like a lion. However at the end of
the video he will get beaten up by a girl which
contradicts his image.
In this scene the lighting is bright, this tells us that
its daylight.
The colors used are all very natural colors possibly
because there's an animal and they are trying to
show wildlife.
I think in this video the relationship between the
music and visuals is contradicting because they
sing about paradise but then we are shown a
person in an animal costume behind bars which is
clearly not paradise.
This signifies escapism and implies to the audience
that the elephant is trapped.
This image could also be suggesting that the
elephant is imprisoned behind the bars and not
able to reach paradise.
2. In this close-up shot we are shown that the elephant is picking up a stone. This is a signifier as this
suggests to the audience that this is what he will be using to escape. There is also action match
editing because the audience are first shown him picking up the stone, which is what he uses to
escape. They are then shown that he has escaped.
I think that this may fit in with Barthes theory of action codes as he picks up the stone and then
physically uses this to escape.
3. In this image we are shown a long shot. This
an
images denotes that the elephant is running and
that there are two police men behind him. This
implies to the audience that he is being chased
by the two policemen, possibly because he has
done something which is against the law and is
in trouble. This may be the reason why he was
trapped behind the bars.
This is a point of view shot, the director has
used Goodwin's theory of voyeurism. For
example the elephant is looking at the
underground station sign. This signifies to
the audience that the elephant wants to use
the underground to get somewhere. ‘notion
of looking'. The director has also used
Saussure's theory of signs and signifiers to
give the audience hints on what the
elephant is trying to do.
4. This image is a medium shot of the
elephant holding a piece of cardboard
with writing on it. This could be explained
using Barthes theory of codes. In this part
of the music video the director has used
the written code as this piece of writing
either tells the audience what is going to
happen or gives the audience some sort
of information.
This image shows the audience a low
angle shot of the elephant looking up
towards the escalator. This could be
suggesting that this is his way to freedom.
The director could also be implying that
the elephant is looking up at the rest of
the world because he feels that his status
is lower than the people going up on the
escalator.
5. In the first image the director has shown
the elephant looking at something. We
are then shown what he is looking at. This
is called an eye line match. This eye line
match connotes to the audience that the
elephant knows where he wants to get to.
It clearly signifies to the audience that he
wants to get to Heathrow airport. This
particular part in the music video fits in
with Saussure's theory of signs and
signifiers, because it is signified to the
audience that he wants to get to
Heathrow airport to escape, get his
freedom and possibly find paradise.
