"Canine retraction by sliding mechacnics –fem comparitive"
1. CANINE RETRACTION BY
SLIDING MECHANICS
–A FEM Comparative
Study using 3 Different
Dimensions of arch wires

2. INTRODUCTION
When an orthodontic force is applied to a
tooth , stresses and strains are produced in
the surrounding bone . Absorption of
alveolar bone occurs in a region of
compressive stress , whereas apposition of
the alveolar bone occurs in a region of
tensile stress. By this bone remodeling
action the tooth movement is achieved. To
plan the tooth movement , a clinician must
understand the force to be applied to the
tooth and the stress distribution in the PDL
3. AIM OF THE STUDY
To study the force distribution on and
around the canine during individual canine
retraction by sliding mechanics using
standardized nickel titanium closed coil
spring on 0.016” round , 0.016” 0.016”
square and 0.016” 0.022” rectangular
stainless steel arch wires on an 0.018”
Roth slot , and there by to assess the kind
of probable tooth movement that can be
achieved using the above mentioned arch
wires.
4. STANDARDIZATION CRITERIA :
- FEM* modeling of a maxillary canine ,
premolar and molar with respective 0.018”
slot PEA bracket .
- FEM modeling of different wires i.e
0.016”round 0.016”0.016 and 0.016 0.022
-standardization of the distance between the canine
hook and the molar hook by statistically analyzing
30 study models of patients who are undergoing
Orthodontic treatment in our department.
- -Standardization of the force levels depending
on the standardized distance obtained from
statistically analyzed study models.
5. method of study
fem modeling of one posterior segment with
the respective brackets will be dine and the
standardized force values generated .
the force level distribution will be tabulated
and analyzedzed which will be
substantiated with suitable photographs.
the force lolevel and the force distribution
with
3different arch wires during canine retraction
will be compared and analyzed.
