We are going to talk about Key Strategies, that if you have it in your app, your app will be instantly a better, more marketable product.
So what are the few key strategies?
First strategy, is that if you can make your application focus on a specific group of people, your app will instantly find it’s niche market. So ask : …If you can answer these questions, you can design an application that will capture this market. In my presentation, I will use some successful applications to illustrate my points.
The first example is the Nike Running App! This application focuses on an Activity - Which is Running. It features revolves around making Running a better experience. It uses the GPS to track your speed and pace. Plays music ….. Currently it is the most popular app for Runners!
Your app also can target an user group. For instance, MomsApp targets Expecting Mothers. This apps has many focused tools for mom= and expecting mothers, such as: ….
The next strategy, is a question you will need to ask… If your app only does one thing or one objective, what will it be? Focus on that one thing, and do it really well. Say you are designing an application that will do Palm Reading. Focus on the subject and make sure it is better that the rest or do something that is different. For instance make it easier for a common person to read a palm by using image recognition? Or make it more accurate by combining multiple database of Palm Reading Answers. Do it right!
For an example, I’ve chose The Evernote App. This app focuses on the subject of taking notes. First, it made itself multi-platform so that your notes can be sync among your devices. Then it expands its capability around notes taking such as embedding photos, audios, maps and even created a text recognition feature to read name cards. Now, it is one of the most powerful, most popular Note-taking-app!
Another example, which is very different. I’ve chosen a game called Fruit Ninja! It’s a really simple game, you will use your fingers to swipe and slash flying fruits while avoiding bombs. But what makes is so popular is because they spend their focus on making the swiping and slashing perfect on smart phones. As results, it’s a really simple yet really really fun game! One of the highest grossing Casual Games Mobile App!
In this age where we check our facebook and twitters everyday, I cannot stress enough that the social element in an app is very vital for its marketing. Think of ways we can let users help to spread the words about your app. Even better, innovate your App to be Socially Driven. For example, if you are creating a Music Mixer app, do not let it stop there. Make is social, so that your users will share their music via facebook, or collaborate to create music. That way, your users will be your marketing agent!
For example, the ever popular Dropbox rewards users with more storage space when user help them get more users. Dropbox goes viral, users get rewards. A Win-Win Social Mechanism!
Another great example is this Community driven Mobile Phone Photography App. Not only it lets users redefine their photos, it lets its users to share and create a following among their peers. Now Instagram is the largest Mobile Photography app in the world!
This is a great example of how a Classic “guess the picture” game can innovate itself socially - It lets users invite their friends from facebook to play with them via this app. One user invite 10, 10 invite 100s.. And walla - it become popular overnight!
Think of something that has been done traditionally, then change it!WhatsApp redefines traditional SMS and turn it around into a cross device, free, SMS replacement.
Look a for problem or an inconvinience and turn it around. For instance Making files available for multi device has never been easy. Dropbox indentify the need and focused on making it easy.
Talking tomcat repeats everything you say with a funny voice. So simple but the app developer make is so fun to use, it is one of the most popular app of its kind!
