Online Retail sales on the rise in South Africa, says new yStats.com report
A new report by Hamburg-based business intelligence enterprise yStats.com covers B2C E-Commerce in South Africa.
Commenting on his company’s publication, “South Africa B2C E-Commerce Market 2016,” yStats.com CEO Yücel Yelken
observes that “online shopping growth in the country is driven by consumer demand for online shopping options and
increasing Internet connectivity but hindered by a lack of trust in delivery and payment security.”
With approximately one half of the population connected to the Internet, South Africa is a regional leader online shopping,
though only about one third of Internet connected individuals made online purchases last year, as cited in the yStat.com report. With
mobile connections increasing and purchase fears being overcome, various sources predict growth at double digit rates over the next
few years. Currently the products most bought by online shoppers in South Africa are travel arrangements and books. As delivery
and payment security improve, online shopping is expected to spread.
Local companies have emerged to fulfill the desires of online shoppers. Takealot.com is the leader of the South African E-
Commerce outlets, and other prominent players include Makro and Zando. International sellers Alibaba.com, Amazon.com and
Ebay.com also attract the attention of Internet users in South Africa, according to the yStats.com publication.
