BMX is a world-renowned
racing and stunt bike
that is used in BMX racing as well as for
the street, park, dirt, vert and flatland
disciplines. In the early 1970s in South-
ern California, children were racing their
bikes on dirt tracks to imitate the moto-
cross stars who were famous at the time.
Initially the Schwinn Sting-Ray was the
model of choice as it was very easy to
customise and personalise for racing, and
by the mid-70s manufacturers were mak-
ing bikes that were specifically designed
for the sport.
A Brief History
of the BMX

In 1981 the International BMX Federation
was established. Just a year later it held
the first world championships and the
sport was included in the Union Cyclist
International in 1993.
There are several models of BMX, which
have been designed to suit a variety of
environments and conditions. The ‘Park’
model, also called the vert, has had all un-
necessary features removed or lightened
to make the frame as light as possible,
and many ‘Park’ BMX bikes do not have
brakes. The ‘Dirt’ BMX bike is very similar,
but the tires have a wider tread to more
efficiently deal with a loose dirt surface.

‘Flatland’, ‘Race’ and ‘Street’ –
