Ageing Asia is proud to launch Ageing-in-place UK in partnership with ExtraCare Charitable Trust to celebrate the launch of Birmingham's Hagley Road Village, in Edgbaston, is one of five inspirational Village communities being developed across the City, providing independence, social opportunity and an enriching lifestyle in later life - a real alternative to the traditional care home. Opening in late 2013, it will provide 240 homes for over 350 residents.

1. HOMES ExtraCare currently has 3,317 homes within the
housing schemes and villages at different locations. These are
available to older people in their local area for affordable rent,
part-purchase and leasehold sale.
2. OUTSTANDING SOCIAL AND LEISURE FACILITIES IN EVERY
HOUSING SCHEME AND VILLAGE Each housing scheme or
village has 5 to 18 social, health and leisure facilities that are
accessible to residents and up to 5,000 older people across
ExtraCare’s wider communities.
3. FLEXIBLE CARE AND SUPPORT, IF AND WHEN
RESIDENTS NEED IT, PROVIDED UP TO 24 HOURS A DAY
IN THEIR OWN HOME BY A DEDICATED ON-SITE TEAM
Residents using ExtraCare’s Well-being Service achieve, on
average, a 9% improvement in their health across 10 health
indicators.
4. HIGHLY-TRAINED STAFF, FOSTERING A CAN-DO CULTURE,
SUPPORTING PERSONAL ACHIEVEMENT AND GROWTH
ExtraCare’s housing schemes and villages are supported by a team
of 1,500 staff, recruited to work directly. Over 90% of ExtraCare’s
care staff are qualified to NVQ Level 2 in Health and Social Care
(the national training requirement is 50%).

social and leisure interests, helping residents stay healthy,

6. ACTIVE ENCOURAGEMENT OF PARTICIPATION IN
COMMUNITY LIFE THROUGH VOLUNTEERING ExtraCare has
4,000 active volunteers representing all age groups supporting
administration, hospitality, well-being and health, entertainment,
activities, and more.
8. AFFORDABILITY ExtraCare employs its own benefits team to
help residents access their entitlements. Typically residents in
each village claim £1.2m in benefits each year.
9. FUNDING ExtraCare derives funding from a variety of sources
including payments for housing, care and support services, funding
from statutory agencies, charity appeals, legacies and income from
Charity Shops.
10. DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES Typically each ExtraCare
Village has a waiting list of 200 places. ExtraCare’s 5 year
strategy includes a £200m development programme to complete 5
villages in Birmingham.
7. CHARITY SHOPS ExtraCare operates over 60 Charity Shops
which provide £0.6m each year to support residents’ activities and
well-being.
