Hi, I am Siang, and for this learnday event, I am presenting a topic titled “What is a slashie?”
This is about a book I bought last year, and finally start reading at the beginning of June
Cringeworthy and possibly inappropriate GIFs ahead
Curious, bought it around the time where a couple of my friends were talking about this term
Also there were multiple books published about this topic at the time
## What?
If life is like an online role playing game, a slashie would be those characters specialized in multiple classes, eg. archer + mage, warrior + healer, etc.
Starts with main class, then move on to develop skills in other classes over time
People who are not satisfied with being good in just one profession
Each slash means new skillset, persona
Most of them - freelancers (according to the author)
No, a slashie does not slash everything they see in life
## Who?
Younger generation, or those who are adventurous - appreciate freedom
To them stability and security is overrated, and they want a more exciting life
## Why?
Development of Information Technology & Society - making new skill acquisition accessible (as well as discovery of new interests made easier)
The ability to pick up skills quickly - mandatory for a lot of jobs these days
Cost of living - driving force - motivation to the trend
Rise of social networking - fast and easy way to connect and reach more people efficiently, find a niche market and service them
Opportunities are not exclusive to cities
Not confined to physical space, work can happen anywhere
Bigger platform to present oneself to the world, to connect, hence:
fan/follower economy: help with deliver tailored information tothose wanting them without suffering information overload
Rise of sharing economy - uber, airbnb etc.
About the person, about the skill as well as experience that may be interesting to some
Be awesome in primary skill, focus and do not suddenly start building new skills before the current one is well developed
Does not happen overnight, or in a snap
Curiosity: discover new things
Ambitious: want to see good in new found interests
Self-disciplined: self control, freedom does not mean do whatever you want
Author lists 5 things to do to start being an awesome slashie
Define clear things to achieve in life, know what you want to do in life
Try to get certified, gain experience, build portfolio, accumulate them over time (preferably in years)
Try writing books, and communicate ideas with other people, train the ability to think critically, and write
Thinking helps to find new way to define a problem, and come up with novel strategies
Do personality tests, but do not believe blindly in them
Soul-seeking does not always mean eating pizza all around the world
In order to think critically, learn how to read effectively and efficiently
Get information from diverse sources, helps to spark new ideas, and new solutions to problems
Skill tree building - preferably dynamic, skills are acquired over time, and the tree grows over time too
One way to get better: have better friends that push each other to improve over time
Useful secondary skills for freelancers: human/resource management, client relationship management, financial, marketing
Learn to say no in life (reject unrelated sidequests)
Do not try to acquire multiple skills at the same time
Discovery and exploration are great, but as much as possible focus on tasks to do (improve productivity)
Reduce time spent on commuting
Time management, self-discipline
Be efficient & enable others to be efficient
Love what one is working on - passion is the key to success & self improvement
Keep challenging yourself, constantly push yourself out of your comfort zone
Do not deny opportunities that might be unrelated to main skills - you can potentially be great naturally in the area unknowingly
Authors lay 7 steps to become a slashie
List down clear goals to achieve
Which answers:
What to achieve and how to develop and advance the branding
What is the standard of having a brand in the direction defined in (1)
Be expressive - communicate idea
Be interactive - approach people
Integrate - co-operate with other domain experts from various disciplines to help each other out
Perform research to understand what others in the field are doing, read their work thoroughly, analyze and find your niche
Propose original ideas - targeting marketing effort through social media to the right audience
Know strength and weaknesses
Present yourself professionally, keep portfolio design and service listing updated - suit purpose
Get copy and profile professionally done if required
Be knowledgeable, prepared in core strength, as well as other areas
Work on financial and health security (as the authors are focussing on freelancing part)
Psychology health - turn negative emotion as a motivation, strive to be the best
Research on the successful figures in the field, know what makes them the best
Do not try to duplicate their effort, even if you succeed in that, that implies you can be easily replaceable
Do not stay out of touch
2 strategies:
Find audience, communicate
Learn how to approach target audience
Make effort in maintaining relationships, be friendly and approachable
Fully understand characteristics of users in all social media platforms, always stay updated about new platforms
Be consistent and persistent in publishing new ideas, eventually quality content would get new followers
Relatively more fixed plan to be carried out in 5-7 years with clear goals, follow through - requires strong will power
Plan has to be realistic
Do thorough research before setting the plan - helps to reduce anxiety in longer term
Easy to validate and gauge progress
Still long road ahead to be one myself, but will attempt to answer from what I read from the book, if I can recall them
