10 Things Nobody Told You
About Being Creative
- Nothing is original.
- “Everything that needs to be said has already been
said. But, since no one was listening, everything
must be said again.” - André Gide
- Every new idea is just a mashup or a remix of one or
more previous ideas.
1. Steal like an artist
- Your job is to collect good ideas.
- Be curious about the world you live in.
- Always be reading.
- Carry a notebook and a pen with you wherever you go.
- Keep a swipe file.
1. Steal like an artist
- It’s in the act of making things and doing our work that we figure out
who we are.
- You’re ready. Start making stuff.
2. Don’t wait until you know who you
are to get started
- In the beginning, we learn by pretending to be our heroes. We learn by
copying.
- Plagiarism is trying to pass someone else’s work off as your own.
Copying is about reverse-engineering.
- Don’t steal the style, steal the thinking behind the style.
- At some point, you’ll have to move from imitating your heroes to
emulating them.
2. Don’t wait until you know who you
are to get started
- The best advice is not to write what you know, it’s to write what you
like.
- Draw the art you want to see, start the business you want to run, play
the music you want to hear, write the books you want to read, build the
products you want to use—do the work you want to see done.
3. Write the book you want to read
- The computer brings out the uptight perfectionist in us — we start
editing ideas before we have them.
- If you have space, set up 2 workstations: one digital, one analog. Keep
out anything electronic in your analog workstation.
4. Use your hands
- It’s the side projects that really take off.
- Practice productive procrastination.
- It’s important to have a hobby. A hobby is something creative just for
you.
5. Side projects and hobbies are
important
- There’s no pressure when you’re unknown. You can do anything you
want.
- Step 1: Do good work. Make stuff every day.
- Step 2: Share it with people = put it on the Internet.
- You should wonder at things nobody else is wondering about.
6. The secret: do good work and
share it with people
- Build your own world. Find the communities you belong to.
- Leave home. Your brain gets too comfortable in your everyday
surroundings.
7. Geography is no longer our master
- The best way to vanquish enemies on the Internet is to ignore them.
The best way to make friends is to be nice.
- You’re only going to be as good as the people you surround yourself
with. In the digital space, it means following the best people online.
- Anger is one of great creative resources. But don’t use it on people. Get
angry, keep your mouth shut and work.
8. Be nice (The world is a small town)
- It takes a lot of energy to be creative. You don’t have that energy if you
waste it on other stuff.
- Keep Your Day Job. Freedom from financial stress means freedom in
your art.
- Establishing and keeping a routine can be even more important than
having a lot of time.
9. Be boring
(It’s the only way to get work done)
- Get yourself a calendar.
- Keep a logbook.
- Marry well. A good partner keeps
you grounded.
9. Be boring
(It’s the only way to get work done)
- In this age of information abundance and overload, those who get
ahead will be the folks who figure out what to leave out, so they can
concentrate on what’s really important to them.
- Limitation = freedom.
- The right constraints can lead to your very best work.
10. Creativity is subtraction
Thank you!
