2. About the author
- Stopped eating durian for 15 years
because bored with it, and recently love
it again
- Never plant any tree, except sprouts
during primary school
- Luckily inherited one acre durian
orchard from parent
- The orchard not produce fruits for
almost 5 years, I try to solve the problem
- The start of my journey into Durian, and
small farmer world
- Still doing coding professionally, so don't
worry guys :D
3. About durian
- Durian is very popular crop in Asean countries
- Many people love durian because of its taste
- Also many people hate durian because of its
smell
- Strong smell because durian is rich with sulfur
- Sulfur also make your body hot
4. There is solution for the smell
- Thailand cultivate durian varieties that doesn't have strong
smell
- Most popular Thai variety is Monthong, and exported all over
the world
- Taste is sweet and creamy like eating ice cream
- Farmer also cut off the fruit from tree before it fully ripe, that
result less smell
- There also variety that taste like eating carrot, without any
durian smell
- So why not give Durian a chance? :D

- Most popular durian in Malaysia is
Musang King
- Most delicious durian personally is
Musang King old tree
- Most popular in the world is
Monthong from Thailand
- There are unlimited varieties of
durian
- Durian is special as cross pollination
will produce new DNA and carry into
the seeds. Means each time the
durian is fruiting new varieties is
born into the world.
6. Why durian fruiting?
- Durian will started flowering if there is
no rain for at least 3 weeks
- Because no water, durian tree is stress,
and scare they will die
- So durian tree will try to produce
offspring before it's too late, the
offspring is the fruit
7. Heavily dependent on weather
- Durian only flowering if no rains for minimum 3 weeks
- During flowering, if a lot of heavy rain, the flower will drop,
and less durian for that year
- During pollination night, if heavy rain, no pollination happen
and flower will drop

- 120 days from flowering until it fully mature

10. Nutrients
- Similar to human, durian tree also need supplements to grow
healthily
- Magnesium, Calcium, boron, zinc
- During flowering, its similar to human pregnancy. The tree
needs enough nutrients and supplement to strengthen their
body
- Calcium and boron needed to strengthen the flower and fruit
from dropping premature

- He is very important in
pollination. He helps at
night during durian flower

- Durian tree without any
bats around, it is likely have
very few fruits because of
no pollination
12. Enemies!
- Squirrel is number
one enemy
- Monkey like to throw
out the flowers and
un-mature fruits
- Wild boar will enjoy
your fresh durian
- Thief will steal your
fresh durian
13. Disease
- Similar to human, tree also have Cancer disease
- For durian, we call it Kanker. Scientifically name is pythopora
- The bark will rot until the tree die if no treatment
14. Technologies
- To apply fertilizers, pesticides or
fungicides, usually farmer need to
spray the tree leaf
- What if the tree is very height?
- With penetrant technologies,
farmer can spray the tree bark
and it will goes into the tree
system
- IOT is gaining popularity to
remotely manage durian farm
15. Durian season
- Usually around July to September in Malaysia
- Only once a year depends on the weather
- Durian season is like mini festival
- Relatives, friends, and even enemies will come
visit you during durian season
- Able to made new friends, new business
connection, and also get to know distance
relatives
16. Conclusion
- Durian is a fun but super challenging
crop
- It is cheaper to buy rather than plant it
- I gained many valuable life experiences
from managing the orchard
- It provide me the opportunity to escape
from digital world, and connect more
with people and nature
