This session will look at challenges related to free speech online. We will address restrictions to freedom of expression from technological challenges (filters, surveillance techniques, blocking access to websites) to the introduction of new laws that curb digital freedom. We will also cover the increasing trend of takedown requests, the phenomenon of privatisation of censorship as well as threats, intimidation and violence against citizen journalists and bloggers. Through detailed case studies, participants will have the opportunity to explore the various implications of online censorship for media freedom. Case studies will include examples from countries such as Azerbaijan, Turkey, Belarus, India and Brazil.

Social Media Is Good for Democracy: A Debate In Chapter 2, a discussion of how social media influences the political and business environments in countries seeking to transition into democracies (without the blessing of the government) are discussed. The text discusses the ability of social media to influence world events—ongoing conflict in Syria, which arose in the wake of the “Arab Spring” that spread across Egypt, Tunisia, and Libya in the early 2010s. Unlike previous revolutions, which lacked any widespread, immediate communication tools, the Arab spring protestors were equipped with smartphones and social media. Twitter and Facebook morphed from informal, friendly networking sites to powerful weapons. Groups used Facebook to announce events, garner online support, and encourage people to participate. Attempts to block social media backfired and increased the number of protestors. In addition, protestors became journalists to the international community, with no lag time in broadcasting the news. As a result, governments such as the United States were pressured to take a stand and to lend assistance. During the Syrian civil war, social media, used as a visual medium, led the global community to unite behind the plight of the Syrian refugees in an unprecedented way. The role of social media as an organizing tool, a journalistic tool, and a support-building tool, all in the context of political change, underscores the interesting interactions of technological progress and political conflict and change. In recent years, social media has become very significant for social networking. In the past, its main use was personal, but nowadays, its becoming part of all facets of our lives, social and political. In the first quarter of 2011, the Middle East has witnessed many popular uprisings that have yet to reach an end. While these uprisings have often been termed “Facebook Revolutions” or “Twitter Revolutions”, there are many ambiguities as to the extent to which social media affected these movements. In this paper we discuss the role of social media and its impact on the 2011 Egyptian revolution. Though the reasons for the uprising were manifold, we will focus on how social media facilitated and accelerated the movement.

To bring it home to the United States, Chinese tourists spend an average of $2,932 per visit to California, compared with $1,883 for other overseas visitors, according to the latest statistics by the U.S. Office of Travel and Tourism Industries. A big chunk of their spending — about 33% — goes for gifts and souvenirs. So, reaching this audience before they get to the United States can be a big priority for many brands and marketers. Given the internet firewalls, it can be near impossible to reach Chinese people in China. Facebook and Twitter are pretty much nonexistent; however there are in-country options to consider. In China, the competition for consumers is incredibly fierce, especially in the social media space and this competition, however, does have a dark side: many companies regularly employ ‘artificial writers’ to seed positive content about themselves online and attack competitors with negative news they hope will go viral.

This article aims to demonstrate that the Lula government is faced with two major challenges in its effort to promote Brazil's economic and social development. The first challenge, of an economic nature, is represented by the obstacles that exist with the spending cap policy, despite the flexibility provided by the fiscal framework and the existence of an independent Central Bank, which make the Brazilian government unable to coordinate its fiscal and monetary policies, make public investments in the expansion of the economy and obtain macroeconomic stability and, the second challenge, of a political nature, is represented by the obstacles existing in the National Congress due to the fact that it does not have a majority in parliament, which prevents the federal government from putting its national developmental project into practice and fully meet social demands. For Brazil's progressive forces to re-elect President Lula in the 2026 presidential elections and obtain a parliamentary majority in the National Congress committed to political, economic and social advances, the Lula government will have to be successful on the economic front, promoting the expansion of the economy, increasing significantly generating jobs and income, keeping inflation under control and meeting the maximum social demands that benefit, above all, the country's underserved populations. Brazil's progressive forces need to commit, starting from the 2024 municipal elections, towards to elect the maximum number of mayors and councilors committed to Brazil's political, economic and social advances. These are the conditions to prevent, in 2026, right-wing extremists from regaining the Presidency of the Republic, expanding their participation in state governments and the National Congress and putting their nefarious anti-social and anti-national project into practice.
