Health Evidence hosted a 90 minute webinar examining different types of screening tool administration methods used for the detection of intimate partner violence. Nasir Hussain, MD Candidate, Central Michigan University College of Medicine will present findings from his latest Trauma, Violence & Abuse review: Hussain N., Sprague S., Madden K., Hussain F., Pindiprolu B., & Bhandari M. (2015). A comparison of the types of screening tool administration methods used for the detection of intimate partner violence: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Trauma, Violence & Abuse, 16(1), 60-69. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is associated with significant health consequences for victims, including acute/chronic pain, depression, trauma, suicide, death, as well as physical, emotional, and mental harms for families and children. This review discusses the rate of IPV disclosure in adult women (over 18 years of age) with the use of three different screening tool administration methods: computer-assisted self-administered screen, self-administered written screen, and face-to-face interview screen. This webinar highlighted factors that contribute to the effectiveness of screening tool administration methods used for the detection of intimate partner violence.

The Mental Health Commission of NSW, Australia hosted a public lecture on 21 March 2016 by US-based psychiatrist and advocate for “more humble, humane and honest” psychiatry, Dr Sandra Steingard. The lecture was held in Sydney and focused on ‘slow psychiatry’, which Dr Steingard describes as the integration of ‘need-adapted’ models of mental health care such as Open Dialogue with the use of psychoactive agents in a “cautious and humble way”. Dr. Sandra Steingard is Medical Director at Howard Center, a community mental health organisation where she has worked for the past 17 years. Named among the “Best Doctors in America", she is also clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the College of Medicine at the University of Vermont. For more than 20 years, her clinical practice has primarily included patients who have experienced psychosis. She regularly writes for Mad in America, an online resource and community for those interested in rethinking psychiatric care in the United States and abroad. Dr. Steingard is Board Secretary for the Foundation for Excellence in Mental Health Care.

This project will determine the cost of low- and high-intensity interventions for depression. The project will also compare the costs of the interventions and determine whether they save money for the health system or society in general, since people who recover from chronic depression may require less public support because they will need to see a doctor less and will be able to work more. The low-intensity approach is called Resources for Services. Under this approach, we give providers and agencies technical assistance on how to (1) screen for depression, and (2) educate patients around depression and their treatment options, which include cognitive behavioral therapy and medication. We also train providers and agencies to deliver these treatments. The high-intensity approach is called Community Engagement and Planning, which calls for adapting depression-care materials to agency networks and providing intensive, in-person trainings, conferences and site visits.
