Introduction
It is well known that on November 7th, 2017 there will be statewide and municipal elections
that will be held in Virginia. The polls will be focused on the hiring of members of the state
in different positions. The analysis of the study focuses on the research of the Virginia
elections especially for the governor position, gubernatorial elections, the lieutenant
gubernatorial position, House of Delegates among others. In political science, elections forms
among the crucial segments of the profession and thus the study holds a lot of significance in
focusing in the identified fields (Bastress 67).
Virginia Governor
The gubernatorial seat forms among the most crucial positions in elections in Virginia which
is also expected to take place on November 7th, 2017. The primaries of the elections took
place on June 13. It is vital to note that the incumbent governor, McAuliffe is not considered
to be legible for the position reviewing the terms and conditions that govern the elections
(Bastress 90). In Virginia, the government laws prohibit the continuous running of a governor
as they can never serve more than one term.
2. Surname !2
The voting system of Virginia is structured to be an open system where the registered
citizens have the right to vote. However, every individual can only vote for one team. There
are nominees from both the democratic and republican parties. The nominees from the
Democratic Party include Ralph Northam who is the current Lieutenant governor of Virginia.
From the constitutional, the nominees include Ed Gillespie who is a former chairman of the
Republican National Committee (Ballotpedia).
Ralph Shearer Northam who is one of the nominees has a built profile for being an
American doctor and has also served previously served as the United States of America Army
primarily as a veteran. Currently, Northam is the Lieutenant governor of Virginia which
exclaims that he is a potential leader for the gubernatorial seat. The fundamental ideas that
the nominee pushes for includes the support for the $15 minimum wage and further the
opposition to the state constitutional amendment (Ballotpedia).
Other policy that Northman supports intently include abortion rights and advocates
the strategy towards the reduction of the increasing abortion rates through education and
further expansion of the access to the contraceptives (Virginia.gov). The nominee supports
the confederation of the monuments and suggests the statues should be taken to the museums.
In an address to the economy the nominee advocates for a salary increment of the employees
through the minimum wage policy (Ballotpedia). Other segments that Northam seeks to
address include the environment and energy, health care, immigration, redistricting and other
valuable factors.
Republican Party supports Ed Gillespie who is considered to be a politician and a
lobbyist. The nominee has been raised in a democratic family, and the profession in political
science was initiated as an intern at Ireland and has potentially grown in the field of politics

(Ballotpedia). The critical political ideas that the leader supports includes abortion, the
confederation of the monuments, the development of the economy through taxes regulation
and he profoundly opposes the Affordable Care Act.
During the primary elections, the results translated such that Northam tool lead of the
Democratic Party with 55.9% votes (Ballotpedia). On the hand, Ed Gillespie took the point of
the Republic party with 43.7%. Based on the opinion polls there is a high probability that
Northam may secure the position. In the recent opinion polls, it is evident Northam has
maintained a 44% support compared to Ralph who runs at 39%. The governor race is
considered to be a marquee race, and it is the race the elections have intensely gained a lot of
national interests.
It is notable that the occurrences taking place in Washington serve a significant role in
influencing the politics of the Virginia. The polls for the election of the governor are
commonly open as from 6.am to 7 p.m. Northam who is one of the candidates is endorsed by
Gov, Terry, the attorney general and other great politicians (Virginia.gov). Other progressive
groups that support the leader includes NARAL and the Virginia affiliates.
The differences in issues include the fact that there is barring upset that the
democratic may take over and thus the next governor may have a significant challenge
especially in addressing the Republican legislature. It is vital to note that both Perriello and
Northam support the need for prioritization of the priorities. The key fields that they show
some differences in the agreement include the gas pipelines, taxes, higher education and the
financing of the campaign.
4. Surname !4
Virginia Lieutenant Governor
It is vital to mention that the elections on the lieutenant gubernatorial seat will also
take place on November 7th, 2017. The incumbent leader of the current lieutenant leadership
position is Ralph Northam. Northam would not be running for the re-election position
considering that he has set priorities on running for the governor position. The nominees for
the situation are both from the Republic and the democratic parties.
The candidate from the Democratic Party is known as Justin Fairfax who is a former
Assistant of the United States Attorney and a candidate for the Attorney General
(Virginia.gov). From the Republican Party Jill Holtzman, the state senator serves a significant
role. Jill Holtzman currently serves a vital position as he represents the 27th district in the
Northern part of the state.
The growth of the political career of the leader has achieved success in growth
through the specialization in policies and laws that relate to charitable and the non-profit
organizations. Furthermore, it is evident that she has successfully participated in the
campaigns on finance and societal ethics (Ballotpedia). Videl remains as an outstanding
leader considering her proposed bills in 2012 which required the abortion centers and clinics
to accord the ultrasound and 2016 also suggested some repeal laws that fought against the
policies on child marriage.
Justin Fairfax, on the other hand, entered Virginia politics just five years ago whereby
he was seeking to run for the attorney general position. During his political career, he has

massively participated in the profession to help facilitate professional growth in politics. The
story of being a strong African American Striver appears to be a stronghold that Fairfax in
winning the support of the citizens in the elections.
The fundamental concepts that Fairfax advocates for, include the rapid economic
growth which is expected to be achieved through employment generation in the state. The
leader looks forward to the development of approximately 175, 000 middle skills jobs
(Bastress 253). The second strategy objected at boosting the rapid economic growth includes
lowering of the student's interest rates and the expansion of the Medicaid.
Other significant incentives and projects that the nominee Fairfax seeks to implement
is the abrupt political debut as the leader idealizes Wilder who was the last African American
governor in the state and helped achieve a lot of success. The state has never elected an
African American leader since 1987. The leader has a high view to the racial discriminations
in the country, and it is the reason he has previously participated in the writing of a lengthy
statement that involves the disorientation of the barriers that the black Virginians face. For
example through the reports that symbolism was valuable while the substance serves a
significant role (Bastress 76).
The political stands of the nominees on some of the valuable concerns on the society
are as follows. On abortion, Fairfax suggest that it should be restricted in the state. On the
other Vogel advocates for the restriction of abortion, it is the reason she recommends for the
transvaginal ultrasounds which demand licensing of clinics as ambulatory surgical centers
(Virginia.gov). On campaign finance, Fairfax believes that it limits on the contribution of the
campaigns. On the hand, Vogel suggests otherwise, and she advocates that the contributions
restrict the encroachment of the freedom of speech.

Other important issues that show the differences between the nominees is the
articulation on climate changes in the society (Ballotpedia). Fairfax considers the challenges
of climate change a priority and supports the idea to implement a Virginia Clean Power Plan.
However, Vogel suggests that climate change is not a priority but in the future it be
considered a priority and Virginia Clean Power plan should be approved before the
submission of the EPA plan. The fields under which both the political leaders agree to include
the support for increment in funding of the K-12 education as education is perceived as a tool
to transition the poverty levels in the society.
The suggested leaders all hold potential to achieve an efficient transformation in the
state. However, there is a need for the members of the society to face the adamant need for
competent leaders. Although the nominees hold some personal conflicts in the aspect of
politics, the citizens should never be caught up in such analogies (Virginia.gov). The leader
with the best interests of the citizens is the correct choice of the leaders, and there is need to
take heed of such essential calls for transition (Bastress 87).
Two Virginia House of Delegates Races
The elections for the Virginia House of Delegates is objected at electing the representatives
from the 100 congressional districts in the ninety-five counties and the 38 cities in Virginia.
The winners are expected to serve in Virginia as the 121st General Assembly. Among the
delegates of the position includes Bill Howell who is a republican and has served as a leader
since 2003. The other representative is David Toscano who is from the Democratic Party and
begin his political leadership since 2012.
7. Surname !7
William James Howell was born on May 8th 1843 and has an example, set an electoral
history in the United States of America. For instance, in 1987 during the general election, he
won the position through a 48. 51%. On 1989 during the general elections, he also won by
99.86%. On 1991during the general election he also secured the position by 75.24%.
Throughout in history of William James, he has continuously participated in the general
elections, and the leader has maintained an outstanding record of success. All-time long the
leader managed to be a Republican party in the state.
David Toscano is considered as an American politician and also serves as a lawyer in
Virginia State. His political success can be accounted on the ability to serve as the mayor
during the period between 1994 and 1996. In 2005, the leader was appointed as one of the
House of Delegates of Virginia, and currently, he represents the 57th district. In 2011 David
Toscano was also selected as the Minority leader, based on the short profiles, it is evident that
Toscano is also a competent leader in the United States of America (Virginia.gov).
In the electoral history of Toscano, he managed to secure the position of the 57th
District House of delegates in 2005, and she only faced elections opponent thrice. The leader
has maintained the democrat party for a long time now and has surprisingly achieved a lot of
success in the political leadership positions. Virginia has developed an excellent political
reputation in the state, and the electoral competitive between the Democrats and the
Republicans have been on point. The Virginia delegates’ races hold a lot to tell considering
the stiff competition between the political parties and most especially the fact that the
Democrats have limited chances to pick up the chamber positions.
There are 33 uncontested House Elections, 60 which are contested by the major
parties and 7 of them which are challenged by others. The central districts that will participate

in the electoral practice include District 28, District 50, for the Republican primary. For the
case of the House of Delegates of the Democratic, District 2, District 13, 31, 33, 51, 67, 42
are the districts participating in the elections. Among the voted bills that the House of-of
Delegates suggests include the cutting support for the Planned Parenthood, restriction of the
absentee voting, expansion of the access to the handguns and the imposition of more
requirements for the voter registrations.
Virginia adamantly needs active leaders that will induce success in the state and
achieve rapid economic growth in the country. The need for a rational choice of the House of
Delegates and other leaders is very important, and the government should focus on
development and growth. The stiff competition may induce the citizens in a dilemma of
whom to choose to achieve success in the city. However, it is vital to base the choices on the
interests of the leaders and qualifications in political leadership.
One Well-Publicized Competitive Elections From Around the Country
At the moment, New Jersey is one of only two states that will be hosting gubernatorial
elections in 2017. The other state is Virginia. The gubernatorial race in New Jersey will be
contested by seven candidates and is scheduled to be held on November 7 this year. The
incumbent governor, Chris Christie who run on a Republican ticket in the previous elections
has exhausted his maximum two-term stint and will not be able to run for a third term.
Phil Murphy is the Democratic Party candidate who won the primaries with a 26
percent margin. Some of the issues that Murphy is championing for include connecting New
Jerseyans to good jobs, supporting women’s rights and creating a new retirement plan for all
the employees of small businesses.

New Jersey, and he has vowed that if elected he will effectively increase the citizen’s access
to affordable housing and strengthen the relationship between the community and the police
force.

resources to the education sector and monitor the spending of each government department.
Gina Genovese is running for governor on the Lower Property Taxes ticket. His focal area of
concern if elected is reducing property tax and supporting the construction of affordable
housing throughout the state.
Vincent Ross is running for governor on the We the People ticket. The governor of
New Jersey is currently considered across the country as one of the most powerful governors
because of their power to elect the state cabinet. Unlike in other states, in New Jersey, the
gubernatorial seat is the only statewide elected office in the entire state. All the other states
carry out elections for their cabinet-level positions. The primary role of the governor is to
uphold and execute the laws of the state. They do so by enforcing all constitutional mandates

stipulated by the law. Consequently, the governor is also in charge of nominating all general
and flag officers in the state and ensuring that they are adequately trained.
Recent polls have shown that at the moment Phil Murphy is ahead of Kim Guadagno
and the other aspirants by a double-digit lead in the race. This is only a month before the
citizens of the state go to the ballots. The poll that was conducted by Stockton University was
released on 13th October and showed that Murphy holds an 18-point advantage over his
nearest challenger, Guadgano who is the Republican nominee.
Due to Murphy’s progressive agenda and Guadagno’s involvement with the unpopular
incumbent governor, all polls show that this will be a home run for the former ambassador to
Germany. Despite the Republic Party holding the majority in the states, this race will be
different in that none of the candidates are seeking re-election. With the polls indicating, that
Murphy currently enjoys more than 50% support across the state it is a foregone conclusion
that the seat is his to lose.
