 In the words of Jack Mezirow, founder of the concept
  of transformative learning
Jack Welch, Former Chairman of GE
"A leader's intelligence has to have a strong emotional
component. He has to have high levels of self-awareness,
maturity and self-control. She must be able to withstand
the heat, handle setbacks and when those lucky
moments arise, enjoy success with equal parts of joy and
humility. No doubt emotional intelligence is more rare
than book smarts, but my experience says it is actually
more important in the making of a leader. You just can't
  ignore it.”

  1. Taking you and your career to the next level Unplug your career (how to) Accelerate your career* With the power of social and emotional intelligence*
  2. Chuck moderator - questions Introduce Mike
  3. Mike has helped hundreds of organizations and thousands of individuals use social and emotional intelligence to improve their careers, their relationships, and their life fulfillment. My credentials: - For 25 years i have been researching what makes people excel at their jobs and their careers I had an executive search firm, and realized that no one i knew who was hiring people had the slightest idea what made people successful, let alone how to assess them I began to study the field of competencies, the traits and behaviors that differentiate high performers In the early 90’s the science writer Daniel Goleman started interviewing some of the researchers in the competency field, and he brilliantly rebranded the concepts as emotional intelligence , which he published in 1996. - The research into this field led me to assessing CEO’s and other senior managers, installing hiring and performance management systems in companies all over the world, being an executive coach to many CEO’s, leading people in their individual transformation, and starting and running the Wright Graduate Institute for the Realization of Human Potential. 20. 1 OF 1 You can see how social and emotional intelligence makes a difference to career success and fulfillment Personal power and influence The ability to get work done for self and through others Career success and fulfillment STORY: Bruce Zivian story: Bruce is a high-powered attorney dealing with M&A. Brought in another John, another law partner in their firm, to deal with other issues for a client. A junior associate working under this partner sent an email to the client leaving out several key words that were important. In a phone call with Bruce and John, the client was furious and screaming on the phone. The client then hung up on them in anger. After the call, Bruce read the email in question, and composed an email to his partner John that recommended the following response: “ I read the email, and I would be as angry and upset as you are.” 2) Apologize 3) Will never happen again 4) I will read every communication to you before it goes out; 5) If you have any problem, let me know any way you want to for any reason. Do not call the client – he clearly does not want to talk with us now. Partner’s response: he called the client and left a message that said, “I hear you are still upset. Give me a call.” Bruce told me that they will likely lose the client as a result of his partner’s response.
  21. 1 OF 1 There are clearly degrees of Social & Emotional Intelligence. Why can some people grab the hearts and minds of a wide range of people from a wide range of backgrounds, and other people can only establish limited rapport with others? There are degrees of social & emotional intelligence. No one is done learning social emotional intelligence. It’s been demonstrated that social emotional intelligence can be improved. If you want to make yourself more effective and have a more fulfilling life, develop your own social emotional intelligence. If you want to really feel fulfilled and satisfied, help other people develop theirs, whether you’re in a manufacturing industry, a service industry, whether you’re an educator, a public servant of any kind, no matter what you do, you have opportunities as you interact with other people to help them enhance their social & emotional intelligence. That’s a key part of what you will learn with a Master’s degree in transformational leadership and coaching.
  22. Two hunters from New Jersey are out in the woods when one of them falls to the ground. He doesn’t seem to be breathing. The other whips out his mobile phone and calls the emergency services. He gasps out to the operator: “My friend is dead. What can I do?” The operator in a calm soothing voice says, “Just take it easy. First let’s make sure he’s dead.” There is a silence, then a shot is heard. The guy’s voice comes back on the line. He says, “OK, now what?” [Pause…] This is a joke… Context: Humor is a tool of emotional intelligence. Puts people at ease. Makes a point. Changes perspective. Can both up-regulate and down-regulate. WHAT IS UP-REGULATE? ACTIVATE THE SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM DOWN-REGULATE: ACTIVATE THE PARASYMPTHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM

  39. Like WGI students, you may have reached a point where you are calling into question some of the basic beliefs and assumptions around which you have built your career, your life and your personal identity. As a lifelong learner, you likely are continually engaged in a process of re-examination of those beliefs and assumptions. You probably have developed some degree of awareness of a gap that exists between the life and career you are currently living and the life and career you want to live—even if you cannot fully articulate all that this entails. You may want more career, relationship, or social success. You may recognize that there is a difference between the person you are presenting to the world and the more authentic person you yearn to be. The educational process at WGI is determined by your personal journey of self-knowledge and realization of potential. It leads you to increasingly authentic and powerful ways of being, knowing, and creative self-expression. And these lead to greater career success no matter what your profession. EXAMPLES OF STUDENTS: Natalie Wing – interior designer, doubled income Ed Wing - #2 in a middle market company, doubled income, offers to run companies based on his social and emotional intelligence Lisa Sanden – becoming national leader in Montessori education Jon Laux – young, developing manager in a national insurance company Example: Lisa Sanden as a Montessori consultant Previously was intimidated when she was not wanted Now can go in and sooth herself and tell truth and gain respect and be valued
