Rigor of high school curriculum is linked to success in college
Expand a student’s ability to read, write, and think critically;
analyze and solve problems; and build 21st century skills.
Advanced Academics courses can bolster a HS transcript and
improve college acceptance.
Many colleges grant credit for courses in which students
earn a qualifying score on AP examinations.

What is C2G? Discuss goal of HS so we discuss what it takes to C2G from day one. Our job as counselors
Two main types of diplomas
Discuss difference between standard and verified credits
Standard diploma: no World Language requirement
EPF – can satisfy Virtual Course and Industry Certification requirement
Total Credits to include virtual course (credit or non-credit bearing EPF and CTE Industry Certification – See Course Catalog
Advanced diploma: World Language requirement, extra year of Science and Math, more SOLs needed
Honors/AP classes are not required for the Advanced diploma
Colleges do not require the Advanced diploma, but the courses required may align with what colleges are looking for
Wide range of skill levels
Teacher recommendation is critical to finding the right placement
Teacher recommendation for upper level World Language courses is important
- You are able to repeat if you are struggling and want to do your current language class again next year.
- Reminder: FCPS requires two years of Health/PE for graduation
AP Human Geography: is available to freshmen but you have to have strong study habits to take an AP course in 9th grade (talk to Social Studies teacher for recommendation if interested)
EPF: available for all grades, but often recommended for 11th and 12th graders or can take it over the summer in the future
Technology Education courses: need solid math skills for these courses
Academy class available to rising 9th graders: Dance 1 (if interested, talk to your counselor – there is an application)
Courses that require application and interview: AVID and Leadership Training
Explain we introduced this with all middle schooler’s last week.
Emphasize how important it is to choose the right courses now – if you try to switch your courses after the school year begins it may not be available
