JANUARY 30 THURSDAY

Putin and His Russia
Andrei Tsygankov,
Professor of Political Science and
International Relations,
San Francisco State University

Since reassuming Russia’s presidency in 2012, Vladimir Putin has
ruthlessly expanded his power at home and abroad. Young activists like
Alexei Navalny, charging the Putin regime with widespread corruption,
have developed a following. However, most of their fellow citizens seem
content with Putin’s authoritarian rule and with the profitable economy
he has developed, based almost entirely on the exploitation of Russian
natural resources. Putin has aggressively pursued Russian objectives
abroad, with little concern for international public opinion (e.g., his
detention of Greenpeace protesters), and in Syria, has openly defied the
United States and forced Washington to compromise with Russian
objectives. He seems likely to remain one of the most powerful men in
the world for years to come.
Educated at Moscow State University and the University of Southern
California, Andrei Tsygankov has published extensively in leading
academic journals and authored many books on Russia, most recently,
“Russia and the West, from Alexander to Putin.”
Pre-paid reservations required for guaranteed seating.
Dinner reservations required by Monday, January 27.
