The document summarizes progress of the Polder Community Water Management Project in Bangladesh. Key activities included delineating water management units, improving drainage infrastructure, installing monitoring equipment, developing improved cropping patterns, providing training to farmers and officials on water management and crops, distributing seeds and fertilizers, implementing improved rice cultivation practices, and collecting baseline socioeconomic data from project areas. The objective is to improve food security, nutrition and livelihoods through more resilient and profitable cropping systems in coastal polder areas.

12. • Key challenges to productivity
– Salinity is perceived to be the
main reason for non-adoption of
improved agricultural
technologies in the CZ
– We hypothesized “POOR WATER
MANAGEMENT/ WATER
LOGGING” is the root cause, not
the SALINITY for cropping system
intensification and diversification
& COMMUNITY COORDINATION
is needed for wider adoption of
improved agricultural
technologies in coastal polders
Constraints to harness potential of the CZ

Goals
• Improved food security, nutrition & livelihoods
of polder farming families; benefits to women
thru
• More resilient, productive, diverse, profitable
& sustainable cropping systems in polders
KEYS

LIVELIHOOD = “means of securing the basic necessities -food, water, shelter and clothing- of life". Livelihood is defined as a set of activities, involving securing water, food, fodder, medicine, shelter, clothing and the capacity to acquire above necessities working either individually or as a group by using endowments (both human and material) for meeting the requirements of the self and his/her household on a sustainable basis with dignity.

Why did CPWF pick the coastal zone of the Ganges?
It’s an area in desperate need:
Many millions of really poor, vulnerable people dependent on agriculture & aquaculture
Low productivity – it missed out on the Green Revolution
Build on 2 of the best projects in CPWF phase 1 – both were IRRI-led
These projects showed that there is ….

Haven’t been as successful as we would like to be, at least partly due to issues around cropping system synchronisation and community water management

Inside the polders there are numerous karls (former river/creek channels) which are used to distribute water across the polder and to drain. They are also used as fish ponds (wealthier people lease sections of karls and block them off with nets to raise fish. In most polders most of the karls are badly silted
