International course collaborating is still in its infancy on our campus. Every semester we learn more about how the international collaborations can improve. Presently, we are adopting a meaty introductory component devised with Rebecca Smolar of Globalization 101, SUNY Levin Institute. We will start the students introducing themselves, by investigating cultural differences in relation to the Media and investigating the gathering of "News". Our introductory lesson plan will be on the Globalization 101 website later this year.

- A past history with the medium: having taught online or an experience using a LMS to communicate with students. - Familiarity with the languages involved, or some sort of motivation for embarking on a language chosen for discourse. - An interest in providing students an opportunity to learn about other cultures and other viewpoints to enhance and evolve the course content. An open mind with flexible planning skills. - Time to meet with their counterpart at least 3 times by video conference before the interaction begins. - Time to set up the online course space in advance as a place where the course collaboration can occur.

As the Instructional Designer for SUNY Ulster, I am constantly seeking out about ways that the faculty and students can take advantage of the LMS in all different settings. In addition to providing a stepping off point in our LMS for people travelling and studying abroad, I work closely with Ulster's International Program Director, Richard Cattabiani, to establish partners interested in international online collaborations. Richard and I find faculty interested to make these collaborations happen. I also work with Jon Rubin, the director of COIL, Center of Online International Learning. http://coilcenter.purchase.edu/ He has established connections with multiple professors from a number of schools worldwide who are interested in collaborating on projects. There are links on the COIL site, where you will find proposed courses from SUNY Faculty as well as from Faculty Abroad seeking academic partners. It's like "match.com" for international academic collaboration!
