This document provides an overview of the course SOCI 112 Social Psychology. It outlines the three parts of the course:
Part I focuses on how social interactions shape individual consciousness and identity.
Part II examines how group membership influences perception of self and others.
Part III analyzes how large-scale societal changes impact individual consciousness and shape social patterns.
The document provides exam questions and assignments related to analyzing these concepts, including papers on globalization and urban networks, and a PowerPoint presentation on characteristics of functional urban spaces.
SOCI 112, Social Psychology – Course Review Part I Concepts &.docx
1. SOCI 112, Social Psychology – Course Review
Part I: Concepts & Theories
This part of the course focused on how exactly this linkage
between social institutions and individual psyches gets made
and perpetuated. Think of examples from [Parts II & III of the]
course that show some of the following major themes at work:
· How our social interactions create and support consciousness
· How our unconscious influences our social actions
· How our self-understanding, or identity, is shaped by the
social world
· What happens when our interactions don’t support our
particular understanding of the world
Part II: The Social Psychological Reality of Groups
This part of the course focused on the ways in which our real or
perceived membership in particular groups influences our
consciousness, our perception of ourselves and others. Choose
one of the groups that we discussed in Part II of the course and
do the following for that group:
· According to the course material, what meanings were
ascribed to them and their actions based on their membership in
that group? In what cases were these meanings imposed by
others, and what cases did the group members look at
themselves this way?
· How did they respond to being understood primarily through
this group membership (e.g., with anger, humor, resistance,
self-pride, self-hatred)?
· How did the meanings ascribed to their own group and to
significant, related others (e.g., men vs. women, black vs.
white, straight vs. gay), become embedded in how they
perceived both society and themselves?
Part III: Social Psychology & Societal Trends
2. This part of the course focused on large-scale historical shifts
and social features. It looks at how these have impacted our
individual consciousness as well as how our ingrained ways of
seeing have supported and shaped them. Think of examples
from this last part of the course that show:
· How new patterns of interaction resulting from urbanization,
mass media, and internet connectivity, change our perceptions
of both ourselves and our social worlds;
· How new societally-shared modes of perception alter our
desires, needs, and feelings (e.g., make us feel okay doing new
things we wouldn’t have done before, make us want to do things
we wouldn’t have done before, or help us do things we couldn’t
do otherwise).
Exam question: Do you think that the changes characteristic of
the modern world have led to a situation where we are more
likely to embrace a fascistic leader (cf. Adorno)? Have they
made us less likely? Are we just as likely as before?
Exam question: Choose one of the three big changes and tell me
what new interactions it has enabled, modes of perception, how
they changed perceptions of ourselves and our social world, and
how these modes of perception altered our desires, needs, and
feelings.
Paper 4
Globalization
EARLY SUBMISSIONS ARE ENCOURAGED.
TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS
a) Microsoft WORD.doc or .docx files only (PDF or zip files
NOT ACCEPTED)
b) DROP BOX submissions only (no email submissions-no
3. exceptions). Assignments submitted in the wrong DROP BOX
will receive a grade of 0.
The purpose of this paper is to give students a cursorily
knowledge on the concept of globalization in the 21st century,
and the effect of this phenomenon on our cities. Globalization
is a result of the establishment of progressively closer contacts
among countries and cities because of advancements in air
travel, technology, and the development of a world economy,
among others. Cities experience physical, economic, and social
changes as a result of globalization.
Read chapter 7 in your text before writing this paper. You will
also find the following websites useful (listed on D2L):
Globalization 101 at http://www.globalization101.org/what-is-
globalization/
Globalization 101: the 3 tensions of globalization at
http://webspace.ship.edu/hliu/347/14global/3-tensions.pdf
Then, write a one page paper on what you believe are the
positive and negative impacts of globalization on American
cities. Give specific examples of these changes. Think about
social, economic, and physical aspects of the city (see below)
and how these aspects change as a result of globalization.
Specific aspects to consider (as a guide only- you will not
address all of these variables in a one page paper):
a) poverty and wealth
b) environmental changes
c) human rights issues and democracy
d) government accountability
e) politics
f) health issues
4. g) education
h) employment opportunities
i) economic challenges
j) housing and real estate
k) cultural challenges
l) migratory patterns
m) gender and family issues
n) crime
o) ethnicity
p) religion
q) urbanization
r) technology and energy
s) terrorism
t) institutional challenges (families, schools, etc.)
Activity 4
Technical Requirements for Paper and Power Point Submissions
a) Maximum file size 30 MB (over 30 MB will receive a grade
of 0)
b) Microsoft Power Point .ppt or .pptx files only (.pptm, PDF,
or zip files NOT ACCEPTED);
c) Drop Box submissions only (no email submissions-no
exceptions). Submissions deposited in the wrong DROP BOX
will receive a grade of 0.
EARLY SUBMISSIONS ARE ENCOURAGED.
The purpose of this Activity is to present in a PowerPoint
various physical and social urban networks, and to gain a better
understanding on how important these networks are in human
interaction. Specifically, your PowerPoint must depict various
types of urban networks as presented in Chapter 8 of your text.
Also review videos and Chapter supplements for this week
before developing this PowerPoint.
5. At a minimum, your 15-20 slide PowerPoint must address the
following:
a) Definition of urban networks
b) Listing of specific physical and social urban networks (on
one slide)
c) Photos, maps, other appropriate visuals (minimum of 10) that
represent your identified networks (Note: one visual per slide)
d) Identify the network component depicted on each slide
e) AND indicate HOW these networks make a city “come to
life” (relationship of networks to human lives and results
produced as a result of these relationships- humanizing the
city).
ACTIVITY 3 AND PAPER 3
Technical Requirements for Paper and Power Point Submissions
a) Maximum file size 30 MB (over 30 MB will receive a grade
of 0)
b) Microsoft Power Point .ppt or .pptx files only (.pptm, PDF,
or zip files NOT ACCEPTED);
c) Microsoft WORD.doc or .docx files only (PDF or zip files
NOT ACCEPTED)
d) Drop Box submissions only (no email submissions-no
exceptions). Submissions deposited in the wrong DROP BOX
will receive a grade of 0.
EARLY SUBMISSIONS ARE ENCOURAGED.
6. The purpose of Activity 3 and Paper 3 is to gain a better
understanding of what makes urban spaces (plazas, small parks,
sidewalks, etc) workable for human use and interaction.
Paper 3- complete this paper first, then develop your power
point
(due in the Paper 3 DROP BOX no later than 10:00 a.m.,
MONDAY, June 12)
Before writing this 1 page paper, read the “Social Life of Small
Urban Spaces-synopsis” at , and watch the 59 minute video
Social Life of Small Urban Spaces at
https://archive.org/details/SmallUrbanSpaces (both listed under
the week of May 29 on page 5 of the Syllabus). In your paper,
identify and discuss specific characteristics of small urban
plazas that are necessary to make these spaces most functional.
In your discussion of each characteristic, identify HOW the
characteristic is beneficial to functionality of urban spaces.
Activity 3- Power Point
(due in the Activity 3 DROP BOX no later than 10:00 a.m.,
MONDAY, June 12)
Find LOW RESOLUTION photos on-line for your power point
that represent characteristics you’ve discussed in your paper.
Identify each photo (location), what the photo represents, and
the specific characteristic that you are representing with the
photo. Based on knowledge you’ve learned with this
assignment- also include photos of urban spaces that ARE NOT
very functional- identify why these spaces are not functional.
Your PowerPoint must be between 10-15 slides AND your
submitted file CANNOT BE MORE THAN 30 MB. I’m looking
for a strong sense of creativity with this PowerPoint.
