1. Plant and Machinery Maintenance
Plant and machinery maintenance is an important part of safety on a construction site. It is not
as simple as just using plant and machinery indefinitely,it takes preparation, organisation and
attention to safety. In order to ensure workers are safe when working with plant and machinery,
they need to be in good condition.
Some of the aspects to consider when conducting plant and machinery maintenance are:
Workers should be allocated responsibilities regarding how to maintain and properly use
plant and equipment and they should be trained on how to effectively manage these
responsibilities.
Those in charge of the site must ensure that an up to date register is kept that requires a
preventative maintenance program rather than only attending to machinery when a
problem occurs.
Pay attention to the manufacturer’s instructions, Australian standards and
environmental conditions.
Develop procedures for reporting faults or defects and make sure workers know what
these are.
Training and information should be provided to people undertaking the maintenance
work. They should also be supervised while performing these duties.
An effective system for confirming that the plant is safe to operate before returning it to
use after being cleaned, inspected, serviced or repaired is also important.
The overall system should be regularly monitored and adapted to improve the system.
Employers should also review when the plant or components of the plant are going to
reach their service life and have them replaced.
