thousands of pounds from its accounts.
A FORMER Everton charity boss was jailed for 18
months for stealing thousands of pounds from its
accounts.
Graham Lewis, 44, showed no emotion as he was locked
up for plundering £5,000 from Everton In The Community
(EiC) while he was the chief executive.
Recorder James Rowley QC said he had no choice but
to jail the married dad-of-two for the “significant breach of
trust”.
He said: “Stealing from a charity is stealing from those in
need.
“As chief executive, he was the very pinnacle of the
organisation and someone whose conduct, by virtue of
his position, must be beyond reproach because success
or failure depended heavily upon him as an individual.
“This was not a theft by a low-ranking individual who
succumbed to temptation.”
Lewis, of Immingham Drive, Garston, always denied the
offence saying the cash had been provided by
Manchester Metropolitan university to train his staff in
research techniques so they could assess the success of
a project in Shanghai, China.

4. “But Liverpool crown court jurors
unanimously rejected his defence as a lie.”
They convicted him after hearing from the charity’s
finance clerk Clare Radford, who said Lewis had “duped”
her into cashing a £5,000 cheque.
She described handing a Lewis a brown envelope stuffed
with £20 notes on April 30, 2008. Lewis, who was
earning about £50,00 a year, told Ms Radford to keep the
lump sum withdrawal a secret, claming he would use it to
generate extra funding.
The theft only came to light after Lewis left the charity in
2008 and Ms Radford reported her concerns to his
replacement.
The cash has never been found or traced.
Philip Tully, defending, said Lewis accepted, because of
the jury’s conviction, a prison sentence would follow.
But he urged the judge to show leniency and suspend
the sentence because of Lewis’s previous “impeccable
character”.
He added: “It can only be described as a moment of
madness because he has always conducted himself
quite properly and carried out some sterling work on
behalf of the charity for many people.”

5. “This was an enormous and disgraceful breach of trust.”
Mr Tully told the court smartly-dressed Lewis had
continued to carry out voluntary charity work since his
conviction and if spared prison could work for them
full-time.
After leaving EiC, Lewis also worked for Knowsley
council.
Recorder Rowley said: “This was a single offence, rather
than a longer course of offending, but it firstly had a
significant level of planning over some weeks and
secondly it drew in a more junior employer in the
scheme.”
Speaking after the sentence, Ian Ross, Everton’s head of
public relations and trustee of the charity, said: “This was
an enormous and disgraceful breach of trust.

10. A FORMER Everton charity boss was found guilty of
stealing thousands of pounds from its accounts.
Jurors took about two hours to convict Graham Lewis of
plundering £5,000 from Everton in the Community (EiC)
while he was chief executive.
Lewis, 44, denied the single charge of theft, but the
Liverpool crown court panel rejected his story.
The smartly-dressed charity boss, who has also worked
for Knowsley Borough Council, showed no emotion as
the verdict was delivered.
Philip Tully, defending, asked the court for a report on his
client.
During the four-day trial, jurors heard Lewis, of
Immingham Drive, Garston, had “duped” an EiC finance
clerk into cashing a cheque and handing him a brown
envelope stuffed with £20 notes. Kenneth Grant,
prosecuting, told the court Lewis ordered clerk Clare
Radford to ask charity backer Manchester Metropolitan
University (MMU) for a “secret” £5,000 lump sum.

11. He then told Ms Radford to give him the money in cash claiming it
was to generate extra funding, saying he would then give it back to
MMU. The money has never been traced.
Lewis denied the entire allegation, saying the cash had been for
training his staff in research techniques so they could assess the
success of a project in Shanghai. But jurors branded his story a lie.
Recorder James Rowley QC adjourned sentencing until January 6.
Speaking after the verdict Ian Ross, head of public relation for
Everton FC and trustee of the charity, said: “Graham Lewis was a
man in a position of great trust and authority inside one of the most
respected charitable organisations in this country. He betrayed that
trust, and in so doing, deprived countless worthy local causes of
desperately needed funds. As a direct consequence of this court
case, there has been a thorough and far reaching review of all
financial procedures and processes inside the organisation.
“That's to say, we are now extremely confident that there will never
be a repeat of this most regrettable incident again."
