Build Your Resume
    One step at a time
    1. Know your audience and speak their language!
    2. Make your resume an advertisement or sales brochure... keep it
interesting, well organized and concise with lots of "white space” and
keep your resume length to one or two pages.
    3. Express value throughout by expressing your skills, abilities and
achievements, especially from your most recent work.
    4. Use power verbs or action verbs (samples follow).
 Please do not write “Responsible for…” when describing your work success!
    5. Eliminate boredom!
               No extraneous “ho-hum” information

References TAKEAWAY #25
Most corporations have policies that restrict references due to liability issues.
Limited information like name, job title, and employment dates might be confirmed
by HR staff. But you can still call on former bosses, coworkers, direct reports,
 business associates, suppliers, etc.

Questions your references may be asked include:

       1. How long have they known you?
       2. What was or is their relationship to you?
       3. What do they know of your major accomplishments?
       4. Do they know why you left past positions?
       5. What are your strengths and your development needs?
       6. Did you get along well with others?
       7. Are they able to forecast your future job potential?

It’s okay to “coach” your references. In fact you must always coach references!

“I Stand by the Door”
                                An Apologia for My Life
I stand by the door.
I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out.
The door is the most important door in the world.
It is the door through which men walk when they find God.
There’s no use my going way inside, and staying there,
When so many are still outside and they, as much as I,
crave to know where the door is.
And all that so many ever find is only the wall where a door ought to be.
They creep along the wall like blind men, with outstretched groping hands.
Feeling for a door, knowing there must be a door.
Yet they never find it.
So I stand by the door.

  • 36. References TAKEAWAY #25 Most corporations have policies that restrict references due to liability issues. Limited information like name, job title, and employment dates might be confirmed by HR staff. But you can still call on former bosses, coworkers, direct reports, business associates, suppliers, etc. Questions your references may be asked include: 1. © 2011 G&A | http://www.gunnassoc.com Job Search Planning Guide McLean Bible Church Special Edition 36

  • 43. “I Stand by the Door” An Apologia for My Life I stand by the door. I neither go too far in, nor stay too far out. The door is the most important door in the world. It is the door through which men walk when they find God. There’s no use my going way inside, and staying there, When so many are still outside and they, as much as I, crave to know where the door is. And all that so many ever find is only the wall where a door ought to be. They creep along the wall like blind men, with outstretched groping hands. Feeling for a door, knowing there must be a door. Yet they never find it. So I stand by the door.
