2. P a g e 2 On My Way To Find A Book
by Katheryn Finnegan
It started out like this:
I received a letter from the head of the Outreach Department of the Westerville
Public Library stating that although they appreciated my participating in their program, I
did owe either a fine of $13.00 or $18.99 to replace a book I had received on December
28, 2004, and had not yet returned. If I could not locate the book, I would have to pay
the replacement and handling fee.
After the shock and embarrassment of keeping one of their books out of circulation
so long wore off, I started my search. I decided to write them an apologetic letter and
enclose a check for the fine , since I appreciate so much the wonderful service they pro-
vide in obtaining books from libraries all over the county to fill an order.
I started in the most logical placeâmy book shelves in the living room. No Sa-
rahâs Song there, but I did pick up a comprehensive edition of The Poetry of Robert
Frost, and sat down for a minute to see if I could find one of my favorites. I wasnât sure
of the title, but I remembered it had the line, âTwo roads diverged in a yellow wood, and
IâI took the one less traveled by.â It was difficult to locate in all his hundreds of poems
without the title, but I finally found it, and, of course, read some others, wondering why
I never sat down anymore to read poetry, which I love, and at one time taught.
Then, on my way to the den, where I also had books on shelves and in a closet, I
passed by my pink blossomed Peace plant, whose leaves were drooping from lack of wa-
ter. As I looked around, my fern and shamrock needed watering, too, so I went to the lit-
tle shelved closet where I kept the sprinkling can. There I noticed among the Big Bog-
gle, Dominoes, and other games, the book on bridge, which had the list of good first
leads that I had promised a friend. That closet was in such disarray I just had to organize
it a little better; something I had been planning to do for a long time.

After watering the plants in the living room, I knew the violet and Lucky
Bamboo in my bedroom also had been neglected. Then I passed my walk-in clos-
et, and thoughtââOh, the book could possibly be where it should beâin one of
the large white bags the library uses for books.â It was not, so after straightening
them and other bags with handlesâ(I am a âkeeperâ)âI decided to save some
steps and carry several woolen
winter clothes to the closet back in the den, where, of course, they had to be moth-
proofed and hung in a zippered bag.
On my way to the shelved closet where I keep photograph albums, old calen-
dar-diaries, and some extra books, I saw on the big old desk my list I keep of
books read, now given ratings and short plot reviews, since my memory is slipping
drastically. I found that I had not even read Sarahâs Song. But where was it?
By this time I was so tired and frustrated that I put up a white flag, sat down,
wrote the check for $18.99 and the apologetic letter, and breathed a sigh of relief.
Now I could cross that off my âTo Doâ list. No bookâbut just think what I
had accomplished âon my wayâ!
