2. It is hard for me to believe this will be my last posting of Directions. I will be retiring on June
1st after the privilege of twenty-eight years serving as your Executive Director. My time here
has been the most rewarding, challenging and exhilarating of my professional life.
I have been honored to work with passionate people who invest in making our community
an even better place to live, work and play. From the board members, staff and volunteers
who have worked tirelessly for the success of our beloved library and community to the
remarkable young staff members who inspire me with their wonder and passion for our
future, I am grateful to the countless people who have taught me so much.
The Westerville Public Library is an amazing place. I love the way we helped invent and
popularize a full range of library services, the bigness and boldness of our ideas, and our
willingness to accept and embrace our employees’range of talents and capabilities. I love
the way we work with other partners to enhance our community and succeed together. And
I love the breadth and diversity of our customers, people of all backgrounds and age groups.
I am proud of what we have achieved. We have grown from a small community library to a
nationally recognized library system, consistently ranked among the very best in the country.
I am excited by our continuing mission of empowering the community and customers and
believe strongly in our library’s future success. The privilege of leading this organization is an
honor I will always cherish.

Many local men served inWorldWar I. Shortly
before the United States entered the war, the
PublicOpinion reported,“TwoWesterville high
school boys have answered the first call to
defend their country in the present national
crisis. Roger and Harold Mills, aged 18 and 16
respectively...enlisted Monday in the Marines.”
Another youngWestervillian,Thoburn Kelser
left high school to serve in the Red Cross as an
ambulance driver. Writing home about exiting
an operating room before a bomb fell killing
all fourteen people inside, he said,“I guess my
time had not come.”
His story and others are part of OverThere: A

Journalist, historian, college professor and travel writer
David Mould has visited more than 40 countries. World
adventurers and armchair travelers alike will enjoy this
peek into the life and customs of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as Mould reads from his book,
Postcards from Stanland: Journeys in Central Asia.

Small Feet on the Run:
Childhood During WWII *

Imagine the perils of growing up in the midst of war.
Faced with displacement, hunger and loss of home and
family, the lives of 18 ordinary children were irrevocably
changed due to extraordinary events not of their making.
Hear these true stories of the World War II's youngest
victims, as told by local author Sieglinde Martin in her
book, Small Feet on the Run.
Over There: WWI Reader's Theater
& Exhibition Unveiling *

Experience the music, images and words of people who
lived through the "war to end all wars". Performance will
include personal accounts of Westerville residents who
served and worked through these dark days. Following
the reader's theater performance, the Local History
Center's new World War I exhibit will be unveiled.

Explore these works of art and propaganda from the
perspective of Ohio history, learning about the artists who
created them, their role in establishing new heroes and
heroines, and their lasting importance in national culture

Liberalized, radicalized, criminalized. Local author Phyllis
Magold's newest book, A Beast No More: Emerging from the

Maker Lab 2.0: Pin-Back Buttons *
Wed., Apr. 5 4:15-5:15pm
Build something new as we put our science skills to the test.
This month, learn how pin-back buttons are created and
make one of your own! Bring pictures from home, browse
through our magazine collection, or use our software to
design an original piece. Ages 6-12.
Starry Night at Westerville North High School
Sun., Apr. 23 2-6pm
Visit the library's booth at this learning festival for live
demonstrations of a 3D printer and experiment with
Makey Makey invention kits that turn everyday objects into
touchpads and combine them with the internet. Sponsored
by Nationwide Children’s Hospital and the Westerville
Partners for Education. Geared toward students in preschool
through 8th grade, their caregivers and families.
May the Fourth Be with You

Follow the force you must, young padawan. -Yoda. Star
Wars fans, choose a kyber crystal and make a mini lightsaber
before you test your powers and choose the path of the Jedi
or the Sith. Costumes are encouraged. Ages 6-12.
