33. Example
How do we take a
grade 1 teacher and
turn them into a grade
1 “moodle” teacher?
34. I would like my
students to watch a
clip on Romeo & Juliet
and answer some
questions...
35.
36. Research a topic and post
findings (X words) and post
them to the group
Watch this video and write
your thoughts below
Next lesson we are looking
at XXX. What is XXX?
Create a document that
answers XYZ and then
upload once complete
Find a good video using
YouTube clip that you could
talk to the group about.
Approx. 4/5 minutes long
The following quiz is on XXX.
It is multiple choice with
further reading.
Using your research tools
find an appropriate question
(and answer) to ask your
peers.
Use this website to make
notes on ……. And then
complete the exercise below
For this task you need to
work in groups of 3/4. Select
which group you would like
to be in.
andy murray won wimbledon
prince george was born
selfie went into the oxford dictionary
not changed for 3-5 years
How do we do that?
Start with the vle
however……….
stop static documents from being uploaded
Not completing but on a course page?
force staff to be more creative
so we’ve stopped them uploading files…… what’s next?
Use the topics within a course for micro learning
I think….
If we use video with assessment linked to one learning outcome in moodle we can create great online learning
students feel what they are doing is of benefit to them
1 video clip
1 learning outcome
1 assessment/activity
Structured and consistent
that’s great benn, but i dont have time to create lots of videos….
according to research the average length of a video on YT is 4.4 mins
http://www.minimatters.com/youtube-best-video-length/
youtube have recognised this and classify short as < 4 mins
with regards to the video, rough around the edges
fast paced
high engagement
video doesn't need to be polished, we accept rough around the edges, because it’s what we are used to.
We watch “how to” videos on youtube all the time. Most of them using cheap camera’s no setup.
We can reproduce this concept in t&l and it would be accepted.
Change the language we use
Moodle quiz = boring
Learning object = hmmm interesting
Learning outcomes - is just text (label)
3 parts of a micro lesson in one topic - giving structure and uniformity to a course
Now need to look at putting these into moodle….
Big believer of style over substance
In education we learn on substance over style
How can we bridge that gap?
Here is my course… substance over style…..
Functionally it works…… but how engaging is it?
Labels….
Specifically the learning outcome label
no hacks, no dev skills, pure css to brighten up the course
topics view (not grid view) built for mobile etc
If we added some simple custom reusable classes to our custom css box we can create exciting engaging content
Yes staff will need to learn a bit of html code….but...
create a bank of template headers, items etc that staff can import…..
two roles? editing teacher (advanced/novice)
Full user / basic user
Make it simple for non-technical users...
Idea: use idea for training…. Bumped up to full user after training
Making it work for your staff
Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.
Transform Moodle Speak to Teacher Speak
Learning Cards
How do we take a grade 1 teacher and turn them into a grade 1 moodle expert?
The concept of learning cards
Grid view with learning cards are the images with step by step instructions on how to create the card (in teacher speak)
Or better still go back to the template idea and have them banked up
by doing this we can
RE-CREATE THE VLE………………..
Turning a teaching space into a learning space
Creating a outstanding online experience
But thats not all
audience questions:
who gives students access to the vle prior to enrolment?
who gives a central vle induction?
who lets teaching staff give the induction?
who uses the vle to tell students about the vle?
Induct students into college life
Low engagement/use of the vle
Falling behind on mandatory requirements (reporting)
Replace hard copy checklists
Central vle induction - all getting same message
in turn will get your students understanding what moodle is and how it is used
will then give staff something to aspire towards and ask for help transforming online learning
Used manual completion for a checklist and required students to complete some form of activity as part of the topic in order to auto mark them as complete.
At the end students recieved a badge and after completion the whole induction process were awarded with a certificate.
This gives the college quick records of completion using reports.
This gives learners a flavour of whats to come with online learning
Which leads me nicely onto the concept of earn while you learn
Loyalty cards, apprenticeships etc
Use of certificate as a voucher for completion?
Build upon level up block to create a virtual shop
Badge concept - hidden page rewarding you with a badge
If you stumble across an Easter egg online, it won’t be the familiar egg-shaped, chocolate kind but something a little more unexpected. An online Easter egg can be any kind of hidden content – from a graphic to a game, to simply a surprising piece of text or code.
They may look different to the traditional Easter eggs but the principle is the same. Whereas you used to find Easter eggs hidden around your garden, you can find online Easter eggs simply by browsing the internet. They are an unexpected surprise, or a hidden treat.
