2. INTRODUCTION
At night time, motor bicycle riders fail to recognize the
pedestrian at a reasonable distance due to many factors
such as,
- Clothing colour pedestrian
- Rider's age
- Rider’s gender
- Head light condition of the motor bike
so that they are unable to avoid the collisions.
The rider’s vision is heavily affected by the dim light. As
the result of that riders' ability to see the pedestrians in
night time is heavily reduce.
4. OBJECTIVES
To determine the visibility distance with respect to
clothing colour of pedestrian, headlight beam condition of
motor bike, rider’s age and gender (experimental
analysis).
To develop a mathematical model to estimate the
visibility distance at night.
5. Select 10 participants as motor bike riders.
Record the details such as age, gender, driving
experience.
Consider following factors in the experiment,
• Gender of the rider
• Age of the rider
• Head light beam condition of the motor bike
Dim beam
High beam
• Consider four pedestrian dress colors (Red,
White, Black, Green)
METHODOLOGY
6. • Keep the pedestrian with certain
clothing at a clear point of the road.
• Ride the motor bike at the speed of 30
km/hr and maintain the constant speed
as much as possible.
• Ride the motor bike with certain head
light condition(dim or high).
• While rider confidently see the
pedestrian, press the horn and same
time starts the stop watch.(stop watch
is operating by the other one in the
motor bike by hearing the sound of the
sound of the horn).
7. • After motor bike passes the pedestrian, again press
the stop watch and take the time duration of first
seen of the pedestrian to reach the vehicle to the
pedestrian.
• Calculate the visibility distance with the help of
vehicle speed and above calculated time period.
• Continue the procedure and record the data by
changing the rider, pedestrian cloth colour, pedestrian
location and head light condition.
9. PROGRESS UP TO NOW
Carried out test rides for 07 participants.
Visibility distances was collected by doing the experiment for,
1. Pedestrian clothing colour.
2. Driver’s age.
3. Driver’s gender.
4. Beam condition of motor bicycle.
56 observations was done.
Data analysis is started and model developing is on going.
Research paper writing is started. Introduction and Literature
review completed.
10. Figure :Test ride for dim beam, white color
pedestrian.
Figure :Test ride for high beam, white
color pedestrian.
11.
12. TO BE DONE
Carry out test rides for the remaining 3 drivers
and collect the visibility distances for above
mentioned factors.(24 test rides to be done)
Develop the mathematical model to estimate the
pedestrian visibility at night.
Carry out a model fitness with SPSS softwere.
Complete the report writing.
