Definition
SDN is a technology that can be used to manage clouds. It is an architectural
framework for managing geographically dispersed heterogeneous networks. It ideally
provides a single point of management for a physically distributed network and relies
on an open, extensible network operating system.

SDN CONTROLLERS
Definition
SDN controllers provide an abstract,
centralized view of the network
resources.
They are used to program traffic and
attribute resources to services in a
heterogeneous network.
They programs router and switches
as to where to forward data traffic.
SDN controllers can be deployed per
application, per network or in a
hierarchical (master – subordinates)
manner.
OpenDaylight
OpenDaylight is a Linux Foundation
collaborative project to provide an
open source SDN Controller.
The interfaces that are planned to be
supported by OpenDaylight are
multiple and can include OpenFlow,
OVSDP, I2RS, VxLAN, PCEP…
ONOS
ONOS (Open Network Operating
System) is an open source SDN
controller that is designed for carrier-
grade performance.

SDN PROTOCOLS - OPENFLOW
Definition
SDN controllers can interface with switches and routers using a protocol called
OpenFlow.
It is a protocol that can be used to mesh layer 2 platforms and separate data plane
from user plane and provide API-driven forwarding rules in data plane.
OpenFlow is defined by ONF.
It can be deployed as a policy interface, to push rules to elements and to have
triggered-based conditions to push traffic to a specific controller.
